Sack Race
For this race you'll need a few supplies. First you'll need to have two empty potato sacks or two old pillowcases. If you choose pillowcases, try the long kind. That will make this race a little easier for grown up participants. This game also requires a start and finish line. Teams are needed so divide your guests into to two teams. Have the teams line up behind the starting line. The first member of each team steps in to the sack. At the sound of the whistle, the two team members with the sacks start hopping towards the finish line. Once they cross the finish line, they step out of the sacks. Then they run back to the starting line and hand their sacks to the next team person on their team. This continues until all the team members have hopped across the finish line and ran back. The first team to complete the race wins! Give a great prize to everyone for playing. Fresh cut cold watermelon is a great prize!
Three Legged Race
It's another race but it is such a fun traditional game. Here are the supplies you need. You'll need some rope or ribbon material. You will also need a start and finish line. You'll need to divide your guests into two teams again. This time tie two guests together at the legs. You'll stand two people side by side then tie the right leg of the left guest to the left leg of the guest on the right. As you blow the whistle the contestants hop across the start line all the way to the finish line. Then they hop back. It's fun to pit the winners against any contenders.
Water Balloon Battles
Is there a better game for Labor Day? Labor Day is the last summer holiday. That means it is hot! Why not cool off with some water balloons? A water balloon battle is the perfect traditional game to play. You'll need two bags of water balloons and two large plastic tubs. You'll also need a water supply. An outdoor water hose would be perfect. No worries about making a mess with broken balloons. Fill up the tubs with balloons and get the party started. Draw two lines in the yard with spray paint. In between the two lines leave about ten feet. Each time has to stay behind their lines and toss the balloons. Whoever gets the wettest loses! But you'll be having so much fun no one will care!
