The wonderful thing about growing up in New Orleans is all the great food you are exposed to. The problem is when you get older you cannot enjoy that food as much as you would like. The pounds go n easier and New Orleans food is not usually diet food. Every meal in New Orleans was a delight and breakfast is no exception.
There is French Toast and then there is New Orleans French toast recipes. My grandmother and mother were great creative New Orleans cooks and there was no limit to what they could come up with.
My grandmother made French Toast which the old creoles called Pain Perdu. There are probably a hundred different variations on the recipe and a hundred different ways to serve it.
My family always used confectioner's or powdered sugar but some people preferred granulated sugar.
Some people serve it with syrup and some prefer it without syrup,
However you eat it or prepare it you have a special treat in store.
Here is a recipe just like my grandmother used to make.
French Toast New Orleans Style (Pain Perdu)
INGREDIENTS
5 eggs
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons orange liqueur
1 teaspoon orange zest
12 slices white bread
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, combine eggs, sugar, milk, brandy and orange zest. Beat until thick and foamy. Pour mixture into a shallow pan. Soak bread slices in the mixture for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until they are thoroughly soaked through.
Heat a griddle or frying pan over medium heat. Lightly spray griddle with cooking spray. Cook the bread slices 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Serve hot. Steve Fenton

sounds good, I still make it the way I was brought up, but I may give this one a try-minus some of the sugar. :)
