I have searched for trainers myself and when I had a large dog I didn't really need him to be a guard dog, so I paid for a course at Petco that taught a class how to make their animals learn to socialize and behave. Now that I need one to protect me, as a single, living alone, I want to make sure that training is done rigorously by certified professionals who know what they're doing and who will create the behaviors that are suitable for my purposes. I found quite a few in Memphis that have good credentials and who can furnish referrals from past clients upon request.

Donna, at My Pet Pro, teaches all sorts of behavioral training and is available for consultation on the choice of the right breeds to use for guarding a home. It's foolish just to get a dog from the pound if you expect it to be a good guard dog. Some breeds are just naturally better at this than others and they need to be taught to develop their instincts in a way that will make them protective without being anti-social or even dangerous to friends and even the family. She gives in-home training and obedience classes at her place. Phone support is available Mon.-Fri., 10-6. Give her a call at 901-354-8795 or email her:Dog trainers can make good money and today, with crime at an all time high in Memphis, many people are purchasing dogs for self-protection and will want to have them trained specifically for this. It's an industry just waiting to be tapped and one that will not go into a dive because of the economy nearly so much as other businesses. There will always be a need to have well-trained dogs. But training always has to be done on the dog-owners too. Once the dog has gone through a round of classes, the pet is going home and the owner will have to apply what he or she also learned to keep the animal disciplined.donna@mypetpro.com.

How's Bently has an incredibly dense web site detailing all sorts of behaviors they train for. They have in-home training, group training, and specified behavioral sessions for special problems. There's an interesting survey on their site which allows people to check off boxes for specific annoyances like chasing cars or digging under fences. It's scored at the end to give you an idea of some simple solutions. But for people who don't have the time to do it on their own, this service would be a good one to start with. The owner, Alan Bentley, holds international training certification in training dogs. Yes, he does train people along with the dogs. This is not a Police dog training place. This is for people who need their dogs trained so that they will obey their masters. To do that the masters have to know what to do when the animal is finished with all the lessons.

Elta Woodlift also trains dogs and she can be reached at espriggs@aol.com. Her phone number is 901-526-2384. Ask if she is ADPT certified. This is the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and its certification means that they have gone through a rigorous course of learning their trade. She teaches both basic and advanced obedience.
