Flying has always captivated the mind of most people. The idea of taking off in a small plane and zooming across two or three states is intriguing. The main appeal may be the thrill but the second one has to be the time-saving factor. If you've been accustomed to packing the family in a van and driving eight or nine hours to the seashore is daunting, at best. With gas prices what they are today, driving also costs big money. Though flying may not save you anything, it will save time, however. Flying can make a seven-day vacation really last almost seven full days, whereas driving will turn that getaway into a five-day family vacation. So, in that sense, time is money. Flying a private plane is also a real advantage for the business person, because it can mean getting somewhere much easier and faster. That translates to deals getting finished sooner. And that translates into money, too.

Texas has always been a good locale for flying schools. The state is so big that just to get from one major city to another can be challenging, especially on the crowded Interstate traffic one always encounters today. Every person who wants to earn a pilot's license will go through similar steps: an introductory flight, and some book training or "ground" training. There are usually some options for this, but instruction will include basic facts about flight, the planes themselves, fuel, airport rules and regulations and some information basic to the control panels. From there, people complete their hours of flight training in the air. The check ride completes those 15 or so hours of training in safety and navigation skills in the air. Thereafter, more hours are completed to hone skills and attain eligability to fly passengers with you. Flight training and certification is far from inexpensive. It can cost many thousands of dollars and take a few years to become skilled enough to fly safely and to pass the certification testing. But once you're decided that a pilot's license is something you really want, just remember to check out all the nearby schools very completely and to compare apples to apples. Most schools that offer the same training will cost nearly the same amount.

Anyone anywhere should definitely try out the 6 months of AOPA Flight Training Magazine to study about the process and to review nearby schools to make a wiser decision on which is best for you. AOPA is the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and anyone deciding to complete flight training should join. They have a free 6-month membership offer usually, with no obligation to continue. Membership includes a monthly magazine, and people can also sign up for the weekly flight training online newsletter for many tips on training.
