Training for Patients with Diabetes Reduces the Risk of Acute and Chronic Complications, According to a Study
This follows from the study by Ana Belén Friginal, nurse Tomelloso General Hospital under the government of Castilla-La Mancha, which for a year - from March 2007 to the same date in 2008 - found out how this affects training in people with diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 attending the Diabetes education consultation which takes place this health center.
The main conclusion of this analysis is that implementation of the consultation enabled the majority of patients with diabetes, over several months and gradually reduce glycated hemoglobin levels up to 1.2 points, showing they had improved their metabolic control.
As a result, these persons reduced the risk of acute complications of the disease itself as hypoglycemia and also managed to reduce the risk of incidence of chronic diseases such as neurological and cardiovascular risks, informed the Board press release.
The analysis focused on the evolution of 87 patients with a mean age of 47 years who came to consult Diabetes education derived from Endocrinology and Nutrition, where they conducted a first evaluation focused on the self-metabolic disease and pharmacological treatment.
After the consultation of Diabetes education, they re-evaluated this and other knowledge about the daily living with diabetes, management of drug treatment, and other questions of the patient.
Later, the nurse in charge of this consultation structured the learning process in several meetings at which he explained the most important aspects you should consider a patient with diabetes: hypoglycemia, diet, insulin levels, management of the insulin devices, modifications and adjustments treatment, gestational diabetes and diabetic foot care.
Months after the initiation of this consultation, the 87 patients analyzed in the study improved their metabolic control and were able to reduce glycosylated hemoglobin to 1.2 points, while all of them showed a high degree of acceptance of this service. Another important conclusion to be drawn from the study is that over 80 percent of patients required to receive or review knowledge and self-treatment.
Diabetes education for the consultation began operations at the General Hospital of Tomelloso in March 2007 and since then approximately 350 patients with diabetes have been able to acquire knowledge and skills about their disease have improved their control.
