Trains: Viable Alternative for Getting from One Destination to the Next

Hop on the Train for Fun, Excitement and Reduced Stress

Elevated gas prices and a crumbling economy! What a combination in today's day and age for a gloomy year 2009. Of course there are ways of dealing with this epidemic and alleviating some of the potential problems associated with a recession or depression. From the standpoint of money, convenience, wear and tear on your vehicle, peace of mind and other such factors, transportation via train has become increasingly more popular. From the early 19th century and the days of the California Gold Rush, mining activity and a efficient way of connecting East to West and North to South, trains were born and still with us today.

What use to be simply a rope hauled device, pulled by horses or gravity powered, previously, were then vamped for the more popular and more efficient and effective steam locomotives, that use coal and are still in use today in countries such as the people's Republic of China. With the need for cleaner, more efficient and less labor intensive means of transportation, electric powered and diesel locomotives have taken the train industry by storm. Whether it be a single car or a rack which features an engine or more with various amounts of cars coupled together forming a train, trains can be found even in the most remote areas of the world. Their is also popularity and experimentation with other means of the so called train concept with monorails. The city of Houston, Texas, Walt Disney World in Florida, the Orlando Airport, just to name a few use monorails which employ the use of linear induction motors for movement. Linear induction motors are nothing more than the strategic placement of magnets on a track that when these are contacted with the cars propels them to the next magnet.

Trains have become more popular over the years since they offer a safer alternative and more enjoyable alternative to driving. Alleviating the traffic jam concept, stress in finding a parking space, expense for parking, while allowing you to relax, take a nap, get up and walk around and enjoy the scenery are just a few of the reasons that taking the train makes more sense than driving a vehicle. Convenience is such a reassuring fact that trains are a viable solution to the vehicle, especially in heavy traffic areas and expensive retail locals such as New York City, Los Angeles, Tokyo or Madrid, Spain.

How about the long distance traveler, or the vacationers. Families, businessmen, couples, young and old have the opportunity to have a safe, enjoyable trip by hopping on the rails. Whether you prefer the more luxurious and faster means of locomotion such as provided by Acela First Class or the standard coach rail, their are many benefits to the proverbial automotive means of travel.

Something comparable to frequent flyer miles associated with air travel, train companies such as Amtrak offer points and rewards for the number of times you travel with them. These points can be exchanged for upcoming trips, entertainment, car rentals or other nice options.

I tell you, it is so much better not having to worry about driving, getting stuck in traffic, how about detours from construction or accidents along the way, having to find a restaurant, bathroom, gas station, breakdown and other variables that can make your travel a nightmare. Jump on the train and these worries are a thing of the past, since a restaurant car accompanies many trains, especially on long distance travel. Bathrooms are on the train, don't need to worry about traffic, unless you are waiting to get into a particular station, which doesn't happen very often. The other problems associated with driving are of little concern when taking the train making the trip much more relaxing and enjoyable.

I used to drive to make the long trek to the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina and to Florida by car and use to hate the drive, especially the thought of the long drive home or towards the end of the drive as nerves are frayed, you are very tired and sick of sitting and being in the car for 16+ hours. The train takes alot of the negatives out of the equation and allows you to focus your time and energy on other pertinent issues like, how long you are going to sleep on the train, or what you are going to do when you get to your destination, allow you to work on that presentation or take care of business on your laptop that can't be handled when your driving.

Yes, their are times when getting into the car and drive makes perfect sense, but just think about the train for some of your other travel related issues namely long distance travel or getting to and from work in high traffic congestion areas such as your larger cities.

I agree that trains are a great alternative to driving in highly congested areas.

However, in some areas, such as the Baltimore-D.C. metro area, viable public transporation via train is just not feasible in many cases. This area suffers in particular because many commuters live closer to D.C., and some live closer to Baltimore, but options are few in regards to commuting between the two - we just don't currently have a cohesive train system that can get you around conveniently, cheaply, or quickly.
