Why would someone want to move to a cell phone exclusively?
The convenience of having a phone on your hip and being contacted anywhere cannot be beat. Some plans will even let you use your instant messaging capabilities as you go. Not to mention your ability to check your emails and even chat. Combine that with an advanced phone with an mp3 player and other computer type functions you may never go home again.
The other thing is cost. The cost of keeping your old land line may not continue to make sense. With the cell phone unlimited-plan prices starting to drop, the value comparison with your home phone begins to be a no brainer, especially if your paying for a home phone and it never rings or gets used. Interestingly enough you will find the younger portion of society a little quicker to jump on this bandwagon than the older established crowd, explained the Pew Research Center. Understandably so due to the exiting of older technology for a newer kind.
How does someone go about switching exclusively to cellphone?
The easiest way is to never get a land line phone. If you have a land line phone and want to transfer that number to your cell, called porting, here is what you can do. The steps are easy but it takes a long time on the providers end.
1. Call your current cellphone carrier or the new cell carrier of your choice to get the process started.
2. Advise them of which number you will need switched/ported from land line phone to cell phone.
3. Ask them how long this process will take. It will not be the same for all companies. Make sure this will fit your situation because it could take up to several days for the companies to port the line number to a wireless number, states the FCC.
4. Advise your existing land line phone that you are porting your phone number to a cell phone carrier.
5. Make sure to write down all names of who you speak with and what they tell you.
Now if all goes well, you will have successfully transferred your old home phone number to a snappier cell phone with all the benefits. There may be some temporary porting issues around the time of the switch according to the FCC. Not to worry. You will be joining a growing crowd of cell-only folks that are not bound by the lines of communication.
