Transformers Movie Toy Review: Spy Shot 6

A new live action Transformers movie is coming out on the 4^th of July and preceding it are many action figures of the characters from it. Spy Shot 6, a Real Gear Robot, is one of them and he is awesome!

Spy Shot 6 is an Autobot who transforms from a digital camera into a robot. He has a camera on his chest when in robot mode which is a very nice design feature. The only thing lacking here is that I wish he were a real digital camera and could actually take pictures. One strange thing with his design though is his eyes. Although Spy Shot 6 is an Autobot, one would think that he should be a Decepticon because he looks evil. Like the action figure for the Transformers character Brawl, Spy Shot 6 also has round red tubes for eyes. These red plastic tubes run from the back to the front of his head and they glow red when light is put behind them. You can see this in the picture that I took of him. I set him in front of my television and the light from the TV makes his eyes glow and they can clearly be seen from across the room. He's the only Autobot in this series that I have seen with red eyes.

Spy Shot 6 has just as good design in camera mode as he does in robot mode. He actually looks like a digital camera when in camera mode. If it weren't for the splits in the plastic so that he could transform, it would be nearly impossible to tell that it wasn't real unless you looked at the back of it. The only problem, and one that really breaks the realism of it, is the sticker on the back that is used for the LCD screen. It might have looked better as a blank screen without any sticker at all on it. One other added touch of realism though is that the shutter button actually clicks and even sounds like a real digital camera when it is pressed.

Spy Shot 6 is one of the more poseable small Transformers action figures. He's the only one I've seen so far that has claws that open and close. Most of the Transformers toys have hands that are made of solid plastic with fingers that are stationary. His over all range of motion is good. The only part of him that lacks movement is at the waist which is typical of most Transformers his size.

One small problem with him is that the paint isn't applied very well. He looks scratched up, especially with the gray paint on the front of him when he's in camera mode. This seems to be a common problem as all of the ones I've seen in the stores have this same problem. Was it an intentional part of his design to make him look like a used digital camera, or is it a quality control issue? I suppose that having scratches consistent with the normal wear and tear on a real digital camera would add to the believability of Spy Shot 6. Luckily though, the paint application on his face is very good, and that is where I feel paint application is most important.

Spy Shot 6 also stands well as his center of gravity is in the center of his chest and he has no extra parts hanging off of him that are left over from his alternate mode. I haven't had any problems with him falling over.

If you want only one of the Real Gear Robots, this is definitely the one to get. Despite any minor flaws that detract from him being perfect, he is my absolute favorite out of all them. I give him a 5 out of 5.
