Transformers Revenge of the Fallen - Racist Twins? Who is the Real Racist?

Say What??

Chris Gremillion
A lot of "movie critics," who isn't, have claimed to have found the Twins, Skids and Mudflap, at the very least racially insensitive and at worst harmful racist stereotypes, this is quite frankly absurd.

When artwork for the Skids and Mudflap was first seen by Transformers fans, they immediately said that the Twins looked like "country bumpkins." Later after director Michael Bay talked about his thoughts behind creating them, fans again were certain, yeah they are going to be like "hillbillies." Then people started seeing the movie and after one reviewer said that it was black racism and it got lots of views, the sentimentality spread like wildfire across the net. Soon the twins were not fighting in a war or providing comic relief they were "shucking and jiving," Wikipedia describes as "speech and behavioral mechanisms adopted in the presence of an authoritative figure. Shuckin' and jivin' usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, used to one-up and opponent or avoid punishment." I personally never heard any impromptu lies or story telling by Skids and Mudflap, and the only one-upsmanship was between them. Saying things like "pop a cap in you're a-" or "readin, naw we don't do much of that" combined with a gold tooth meant that they were black stereotype and NOTHING ELSE. People wrote that 'while they were generally the person to make an off-color joke, this movie went too far.'

The thing I think is funny about the allegations of racism in the movie, is that none of the traits that these critics say the Twins display are not anything that anyone can say truly describes only one group of people or not. Only a misguided person would think that "jug-eared" was a trait that only fell on a particular race, the same way you cannot say illiteracy describes one race or another. I mean, I could single out nearly any trait from nearly any character of any movie and do that but that would not make it true.

And to Michael Bay's credit he has only added fuel to the fire by saying the roles "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters," Michael Bay went on to state "I don't know if it's stereotypes - they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is (the) kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it." He then added "I purely did it for kids. ... Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them." Essentially he says that you will see what you want to see, But these are his thoughts behind creating the character.

I could say that the character of Jetfire was a mean stereotype of old British dudes but that would not make it so, I could call the character of Wheelie a harmful stereotype of the family dog but that does not mean he was.

Basically what I am saying is that I do not think the claim of racism stands up well. When I saw the movie, both I and my partner saw the Twins as displaying more a machismo type of character young, new recruits trying to prove themselves to guys who had been at this war for ages while not taking things quite seriously enough. All in all I, my daughter and my partner all thought this movie was real good fun, we laughed at the funny characters, cheered at the amazing fight scenes and my heart sank when... well, you should really just see for yourself. This is an amazing movie.
