Transformers: War for Cybertron for PS3 Video Game Review
Activision's First Person Shooter Based on Transformers: Enough Said
Story
Set long before the Transformer events of the television shows or movies, this game's action takes place not on our nice green and blue planet, but the metallic planet of Cybertron. In the separate storylines for Decepticons and Autobots, you are either trying to return Cybertron to the "golden age" of Decepticon rule or trying to stop these same Decepticons from messing up a perfectly peaceful civilization. You get to play as all of your favorite characters on both sides, so no matter who you are rooting for you'll be satisfied.
Campaign Mode
In the game, there are 10 levels in all--five each for the Decepticons and the Autobots. You go through levels blasting soldier bots and destroying bosses. At the end of each campaign there are some epic boss battles that are so fun you'll want to try them over and over again. The Decepticon levels have the disadvantage of all being on the same planet, so all of the levels end up looking the same. In the Autobot story, you are launched into space after a while, giving you some much needed variety.
Multiplayer
While the campaign mode is good, the multiplayer of this game is where it really shines. Not only are there a huge number of customizable features, but the multiplayer mode is also offered online, making for some endless fun even if you don't have a bud around to play with. The controls are tight and the weapons are nice. You can assign the weapons you want to your character along with some special abilities. These abilities work in a rock, paper, scissors type of way with your opponents, since some abilities and cancel out others' abilities. The action is fast and intense--exactly what you should hope for from machines supposedly able move fast despite their size. The multiplayer really needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated. It does what many other games do and then some. The bottom line is that it is a ton of fun which, we have to remember, is what games are really all about.
Conclusion
This game is not a classic tie-in with lame storyline and half-attempted gameplay. The campaign mode is totally new, though not amazing enough to carry the game as a whole. Where it does shine is in the multiplayer. If you love a good third person shooter, then this may be a game to check out. Critics have given from a 6.5 to 9/10 mostly for outstanding multiplayer.
