Transit Drive-In Theater in Lockport, NY

Going to the drive-in is a classic activity that reached its peak in the 1950s and 60s. Over time, the availability of drive-ins across the country has declined but a few are still in existence. The Transit Drive-In in Lockport, NY is New York's largest drive-in still in operation. The drive-in has four "theaters" which can hold up to 1,000 cars in total. It remains a popular activity in the Western New York area, especially on summer nights. The Transit Drive-in is located at 6655 S. Transit Road in Lockport. It is open every night from mid-May through Labor Day.

The drive-in is a family owned business. It has been owned and operated by the Cohen family since 1957. The drive-in is incredibly popular and usually fills with 1,000 most weekends. The owners recommend that visitors arrive up to an hour before their movie is scheduled to start to get a space. While you wait for your movie to start, you can play a round of miniature golf for $3 per person.

The drive-in is a great bargain compared to many other local movie theaters. For $8, adults can enjoy two movies in a night. Children's tickets are only $3. To keep prices low, the movies for the weekend are usually not announced until Monday night so that the theater can negotiate lower costs with the film companies. They try to pair movies that would go well together and be appropriate for the same age range. However, you are not allowed to switch screens between the movies.

There is a small concession stand available if you need a snack. Much of the food is quite tasty. You can also bring your own snacks, which is not usually allowed in traditional movie theaters.

You listen to the movies by setting your car radio to a specified station. I prefer this method because it gives good quality sound that is easy to hear. Most car batteries have no problem handling this. The staff is even willing to explain to you how to turn your daytime running lights off and jumpstart your car if you do happen to have a problem.

You can either choose to sit in your car and watch the movies or bring lawn chairs and watch them in front of your car. This is a fun option but watch out for the mosquitoes in the middle of summer.

The Transit Drive-In is a fun, affordable way to spend an evening that is a tradition for many people in the Western New York Area.
