Transport for Tourists in New Zealand
New Zealand is a Popular Tourist Destination with a Network of Buses, Trains and Ferries
New Zealand has a good road system that is well maintained. Rental car companies abound and it is possible to hire a car for an extended period at a reasonable rate. Many tourists choose to cycle around New Zealand and this is a wonderful way of seeing the countryside.
Buses in New Zealand
New Zealand is home to a number of tour companies who operate buses to and from the best tourist areas. While they usually originate in the bigger cities, the tours can be joined at different points along their journey. Other bus companies provide daily services that run from one end of the country to the other. Their rates are extremely reasonable and flexipasses are available.
The larger cities have buses that run to suburban areas.
Trains in New Zealand
Auckland and Wellington have an extensive rail system that serves commuters in the greater city area and beyond. Most of the trains run every half hour with more services being available during peak periods. Day passes are available for the trains or trains and buses combined.
The Tranzscenic train service runs 3 trains that are geared towards tourists. The Overlander runs daily from Auckland to Wellington in the North Island. In the South Island, the Tranzalpine runs daily from Christchurch to Greymouth return. This journey includes incredible mountain scenery, forests and lakes. The Tranzcoastal runs daily from Christchurch to Picton return and includes unspoilt coastlines, seal colonies and salt pans.
Ferries in New Zealand
New Zealand is divided into the North Island and South Island and a number of ferry services connect the two. The journey is approximately three hours and runs between Wellington in the north and Picton in the south. The ferries can carry vehicles and the rates are reasonable. Onboard entertainment includes movies and a range of restaurants.
Smaller ferries operate in many coastal areas such as Auckland, Wellington and Lyttelton near Christchurch and offer an easy way of accessing islands and mainland areas.
Flying and Airlines in New Zealand
There are two main airlines that operate in New Zealand. Jetstar is a subsidiary of Qantas and flies between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Air New Zealand is the national carrier and services all the cities and many of the smaller towns as well. Reasonable fares are available especially if booked a few months in advance and both airlines offer regular sales and specials.
New Zealand is a small country that is well serviced by a number of transport options. Many tourists use a combination of methods to get around and enjoy the variety afforded by buses, trains, cars, ferries and airplanes.
