Travel to America's Largest House: The Biltmore Estates Brings You Back in Time with Rich History
Biltmore Estate's in Ashville, North Carolina
History of Biltmore Estates
The building of this massive project took the knowledge of some of the most renowned architects during this time; such as Richard Morris Hunt, whom modeled the house after three palaces that were built in the 16th century France. This amazing house features four acres of floor space with 34 bedrooms, 250 total rooms and 43 bathrooms with 65 beautifully sculpted original fireplaces. At the basement level housed the servants quarters (which were extremely elegant and posh). Along with the indoor swimming pool, changing rooms, bowling alley, gymnasium, several kitchens and so much more.
During a trip to Paris, France, George Vanderbilt met and instantly fell in love with Edith Stuyvesant Dresser. In the summer of 1889 George and Edith were married and then returned to America where this bride must have found herself in shock at the monstrous house now to be hers. George and Edith Vanderbilt opened up the estate to family and friends on Christmas Eve in 1895. Georges reason why he built such an extravagant home; he wanted a country retreat in which he could pursue his passion for literature, horticulture and the arts. In 1900 the Vanderbilt's gave birth to a daughter Cornelia Vanderbilt (1900-1976) she was born on the estate and grew up on the estate and died on the estate.
