Travel Amsterdam: The Van Gough Museum

See the the Largest Collection of Van Gough's Paintings in the World

While travelling in Amsterdam, the Van Gough museum is a must see. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Van Gough museum is the only museum of its kind, and a showcase to the work of Vincent Van Gough. The museum, which opened in 1973 has the largest collection of Van Gough's painting in the entire world, as well as work by several other artists who were painting during the 19th century, the same time as Van Gough.

While at the museum, you can either choose to tour with your own guide (The museum allows anyone to act as a tour guide as long as they keep groups small) or by yourself using the museums audio tour headphones for a small fee. The audio tour is available in several different languages so it is accessible to everyone.

Many people are acquainted with Van Gough's work, but few have seen all of the paintings that are available for you to see at the Van Gough museum. What you may perceive as "typical Van Gough" could be completely changed after seeing the museums collection.

In addition to the paintings, the museum also has a reading room which is quite neat. In the reading room you are free to sit and explore the museums resources on van Gough and learn more about the artist. There are several computers to give you access to internet sites, as well as a multitude of books to investigate.

The Van Gough museum is a must see for any art lover who is in the Amsterdam area. This is one of the only places that you can see Van Gough's work. It is amazing to see so much of his work showcased together, and to be able to compare his work, side by side with other painters from the same time period. The Reading room is a extra special additional that can help bring a great deal of education to your trip as well.

The Museum is easily reached by tram from all over Amsterdam and has tickets available for sale via their website or at the door. Currently the museum doesn't offer discount for large groups or for students, but they do have a considerable discount for children up through the age of seventeen.

As you would imagine, the museum is quite popular with tourists. When you plan a trip, come prepared to deal with crowds. The museum does not supply any of their own tour guides, so you may want to do a search on your own for an educated guide if it is something you or your group would be interested in.

For families with children: The museum has a great scavenger hunt for kids that keeps them interested in the paintings long enough for parents to enjoy the museum. Kids are given a brochure with clues to look for in paintings. Thanks for writing about this great museum; it's one of my favs.
