If your idea of a Caribbean vacation involved embracing your curious and wild side, then there's an island that's perfect for you. Antigua is not nearly as popular among American tourists as many of the islands that surround it in the Caribbean, but that's all a huge part of its charm. There, you won't be swallowed up by tourism at its finest. Instead, the island of Antigua opens itself up as a Caribbean playground. It sits as a first rate reminder of what life on the islands used to be and what it still could be for the informed traveler.

What is there to do in Antigua? For starters, you could make a visit to one of the more than 365 fantastic beaches that populate the island. The locals will tell you that they have "one beach for every day of the year" and they're right. The beaches aren't clones of each other, either. They all have personality and each offer something a little bit different. The beach area in Antigua is so expansive that even the oldest of local probably hasn't been to every one of them. Simply put, you will never run out of new sand and new experiences, no matter how long you stay.

Everything in Antigua seems natural and nothing in its tourism market is the least bit forced. They want you to enjoy Antigua as the settlers did 4,000 years ago. There are numerous cays and coves that tourists can visit. The beauty of these areas and the numerous number of natural beings that inhabit them will make this a sure fire destination for any nature lover.

Though everything is natural, they have embraced a little bit of the modern world. You'll find many untouched beaches, but there are some resorts where you can stay. In addition to that, most travelers will enjoy spending some time in the beachside casinos that are all over the place. Gambling is a popular pastime in this country and they aren't shy about it. It's Las Vegas without the flare, but with some spectacular sightlines.

As for places to visit when you head to Antigua, you'll want to start with some of the great beaches. Most of the beaches are open for public access, giving travelers a tremendous amount of freedom to go where they please. Darkwood Beach on the Southwest part of the island offers some of the most fantastic sightlines in all of the Caribbean. This is a spot where the locals go because it's relatively untouched in regards to huge developments. You'll still find a couple of local beach bars to bum around in, but it retains the character of this island with remarkable certainty.

If you want to come to Antigua, they'll welcome you in with open arms. They're proud of their island and they don't claim to be some tourist haven. They simply live with a vibrant culture and hope you enjoy that alongside them.
