Getting There and Getting Around: Plane, Trains, and Automobile
Depending on how near or far your travel destination is, you should decide on your mode of travel based on how much you are willing to spend, and how much time you're willing to spend on the road (or air). Overland transport like coaches, buses or trains are cheaper and allow you to immerse in your surrounding and probably meet with interesting travel companions on the road.
Air transport will get you there quickly, but unless you're up to putting in a bit of extra cash on tickets and have no fear of flight, then it is safe to say this may be a better option for those far-flung travels or places not accessible by land. Look for promotional fares by airlines. Remember that when you purchase tickets from budget airlines that you are prepared to face possibly unexpected surprises; like extra payment for at check-in when you find out that you're only allowed a certain weight or number for hand-carry luggage; or find out that seating arrangements are a free-for-all, muscle-my-way-through fight to get the better seat.
Once there, use local public transport, like buses, trams or even walking (you'd be surprise how accessible most cities are on foot). If you have to use taxis, always insist on the meter.
Where Do I Stay: Accommodations
Traveling during non-peak periods is best, as hotels, hostels, and guest houses will run promotional rates. It also helps to find out where geographically you plan to stay before making a reservation, to know how close it is in relation to things you plan to do there, as well as finding the fastest and cheapest way to get around without having to rely on airport/hotel transfers. Word of mouth and first hand experience is always a great help, so ask around.
Now that I'm here, now what?
Eat where the locals eat, as these are half the time the cheapest options. If you're up to spending a little bit more on food because the local fare isn't something that's exactly up your alley, then go for it. But the essence of traveling is to experience everything and anything a country and culture has to offer, and that always includes, food!
Online resources are a great tool to help you plan that dream holiday you've always wanted. Note down all options available to you, and then make the choice that best suits you and your pocket!
