Travel Destinations in Spain

Emma Geller
Travelers to Spain are in for exposure to a variety of cultures and traditions. Spain has many regions, each of which has separate government and localized ways of doing things, along with local traditions and cultures to witness.

Barcelona, one of the world's hottest travel destinations, visitors will find the openwork spires of the El Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia (The Church of the Holy Family). This neo-gothic architectural masterpiece is known for its undulating curves and flamboyant design. In the oldest part of the city, the Church of San Pablo del Ocampo and the Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia, a monument to Christopher Columbus.

Barcelona also sports many fine educational and art institutions. The University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Royal Archives of Aragon, the Archaeological Museum, the Museums of Ancient Art and of Modern Art and the Contemporary Art Museum are just a few of those to be found here.

The capital of Spain, Madrid, is known for its thriving night life. Travelers will be entertained by the bars and summer terazas here. Three of the finest museums in the world are also to be found in Madrid, allowing you to travel through Spain's art history including Velazquez's Las Maninas and Goya's Las Majas. Other notable art includes Pablo Picasso's Guernica, a depiction of the Spanish Civil War.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza art museum houses over 800 paintings and the National Library holds copies of every book published in Spain. Other cultural museums include the Museum of Bullfighting and the National Museum of Decorative Arts. The Cultural Center of Madrid houses their world-famous opera or theater for zarzuela. And, of course, you can visit the Royal Palace in all its 18th and 20th century splendor.

One of the greatest works of Moorish art in Spain, that should not be missed, is the Alhambra Palace. It contains several courtyards and patios and, located in Granada, is a superb piece of architecture.

Cordoba, a city not to be missed, includes the Mezquita, Europe's grandest and most beautiful mosque. Alcazar is another great destination, though now mostly in ruins, it has a rich history including its service as a venue for the Inquisition.

Sprawling beaches and resorts are also along the cost of Spain, offering private coves and beautiful beach experiences.

The city of Valencia has a tasteful mix of old and new architecture. The La Ciutat de les Arts i les Cienies Complex is one example of some the most modern architectural creations in Spain. Each building in the complex is surrounded by large pools of water which reflect the lights and structures. Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and is famous for the Fallas Festival held each year, its colorful Orange Groves, and elaborate architecture.
