Tips for Keeping Kids Entertained when Traveling

Keeping kids entertained on those long summer drives or road trips to see friends and relatives can be a challenge. Sure with DVD players, electronic handheld games, kids have more options than ever to help them stay entertained on those long trips, but even with all those technological gadgets sometimes parents need to come up with things to do that keep the kids happy and the driver focused on driving.

Ideas for Kid Travel Games and Activities

A fun travel game for kids, a scavenger hunt can keep kids entertained for the entire journey. A twist on a traditional scavenger hunt, this fun travel game encourages to visually search for items listed on their list, instead of physically going around to collect items. If you are going on a cross-country road trip, consider having a new sheet for each day. Try to focus the game upon items they will discover in the region you are driving through. Have a special treat set aside for each child when they complete their sheet.

If you are short on time, check out the Moms Minivan web site, there are several printable scavenger hunt worksheets for you to print out and take with you.

Another fun travel game to keep kids busy is a counting game. A simple game to play for kids of all ages, the counting game involves counting an object for a period of time. Start the game off with counting something simple, such as cows and then change it up every five to ten miles. Instead of cows, change the item the kids will be counting to red cars, city signs, billboards, or houses.

To help minimize the calls of "how much longer," from the back seat, create a landmark guide for your kids to track the progress of the trip themselves. Provide specific towns or landmarks that you will pass along your trip and encourage them to color in or check off. Beside the landmark, include the amount of time left to make it to your destination. This fun travel game will keep kids entertained and help educate them on where cities, states and historical landmarks are located. To add even more fun to this kids travel game, make one of the landmarks a restaurant or ice cream shop that you plan to stop at for a bite to eat.

Another fun travel activity for kids is to have a sing-along. Load all their favorite songs onto your mp3 player and create a kids favorite playlist for them to sing-along with as you head merrily down the road. Or visit the local library and have the kids select an audio book or two to listen to along the way.

With a little planning in advance, you can make your next road trip with the kids even more enjoyable by packing plenty of games and activities to keep them entertained along the way. Who knows, you may create a new family tradition with one of these fun travel games for kids.
