As mentioned, Alaska is full of national parks and lands for public visits. Take the kids to the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, you will want to get an experienced guide to go along of course, and depending on the season you can see and learn about all kinds of animals native to the area, from eagles to bears. This site is also popular for hiking, camping, and fishing. If you choose to take one of the many guided tours offered, you most likely won't have to worry about equipment or food, as it will be inclusive in your package.
For the history fanatic, be sure to include visits to the Aleutian World War 2 National Historic Site, the Inupiat Heritage Center, and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. At the Aleutian Site, you can explore an old army base that was used as an important defense during the war. Most of the buildings no longer stand, but many of the original gun mounts and lookout sites still remain.
At the Inupiat Heritage Center, you can learn about the many crafts and cultures of the Inupiat Eskimo peoples. The Center's main purpose is to serve as a reminder of the native Alaskans part in the all important whaling industry that the state depends upon, especially during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Gold Rush Park was built to commemorate the importance of the gold rush that occurred during 1897 and 1898. You can visit the many historical saloons and stores depicting that time period. There also are historical walking tours, camping, fishing, and river rafting events, depending on the timing of your visit. Permits are required for some of the hiking trails and camping sites, purchase prices vary, but the experience is well worth and fee that you would have to pay.
For the inexperience traveler, or those unfamiliar with outdoor camping in the wilderness, it may be better to look into one of the package tours available by many of travel companies. These tours can help ensure that you get to hit all of the main sites and events going on during your trip, and can also help you with finding lodging and transportation. It is probably a good idea to do some research on the state beforehand, to try to decide what exactly you would be interested in doing and seeing, before you start speaking with a travel agent. By having a list compiled first, it will make it easier for them to help you plan your trip accordingly. There are many informative books and websites that can help you learn about all of the wonderful things the state has to offer, so you are sure not to miss out on anything.
There is something for everyone in this state, whether you are young or old, seeking fun and adventure, rest and relaxation, or just a fun, family trip everyone can enjoy. You never know, you may not want to leave once you get there!

Post a CommentI've love to visit Alaska, but, definitely, in the summer. Excellent work. :-)
Never been there, would prefer the summer months though, sounds good.
I want to go up there and fish. That would be a blast.
My husband and I have always had our eye on a trip to Alaska! I just think it is such a beautifully natural place!
Another place I'd love to visit! Thanks for the info!
I've heard so many positive things about Alaska, but I have never actually had a chance to visit yet.
