Travel Guide For Mexico Beach, Florida

What Makes Florida's "Forgotten Coast" so Unforgettable

Malerie Lee
Mexico Beach, a tiny community on Highway 98 between Panama City Beach and Port St. Joe, has a certain feel to it that's hard to explain. It lacks the party-like-it's-Spring-Break atmosphere of its neighbor to the west, and it's a little sleepier than Port St. Joe's marina town, which has more to do (dive shops, ice cream parlors, grocery stores). What Mexico Beach has is a laid-back attitude; it's one that says, "come on in; the water's fine."

Go out to the water

Of course, if you're visiting the beach, it's obvious. But really, Mexico Beach has some of the warmest, most clear water on the Emerald Coast. Lay down a towel and people-watch. You'll find there is a slightly older, more pleasant crowd than you're used to, and that they're mostly either locals or guests at the El Governor Motel, the largest (and one of the only) beachfront inns at Mexico Beach. Hundreds of shells line the tide's edge, and fishing enthusiasts try their luck from the pier that separates the port from the rest of the Gulf. Sailboats lazily float by, parasailers fly around over the water, and if you look closely, you may see a dolphin or two. Remember the sunscreen, because you'll wonder where the time went.

Sing karaoke at El Governor

The motel holds karaoke nights for its guests on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. At sundown, the poolside bar converts into a stage for those willing to perform for a crowd. The kid-friendly atmosphere is inviting to families and couples alike, as well as solo travelers. The friendly bartenders mix a variety of tropical drinks that only add to the mood. By the end of the evening (and after a few daiquiris), you may be brave enough to step up to the microphone yourself, only to be cheered on by your new fans.

Go "house-hunting"

You may not be in the market for a piece of real estate, but the houses and condominiums at Mexico Beach are a visual force to be reckoned with. The breezy, one-of-a-kind architecture of the beach houses that line the sand--and of the brightly colored condo communities--is guaranteed to turn heads.

Eat, shop, repeat

The fun and simple stores and eateries in Mexico Beach are a must for visitors. Stroll along the sidewalk and visit any of the local restaurants, where you'll find fresh, delicious seafood (Toucan's) or homestyle comfort food (Sharon's). Sit down for a drink at an outdoor lounge (Ruby Rum Runner's), or play pool inside. Look around in one of the unique shops just across from the water, and come out with a just-for-you souvenir.

Get fresh seafood

If you're a lover of seafood, a Mexico Beach trip is your perfect opportunity to pick some up. There are a few local sellers who have what you want, fresh off the boat. Taking some of the fare home with you will ensure you take back another piece of the beach.

Watch the sunset

Rumored to have the most beautiful on the Coast, Mexico Beach's breathtaking sunset draws people out to watch every night. It's something you'd have to see for yourself, and it's the perfect way to end a day (or many) in this special place.

The next time you find yourself needing a weekend stay in a breezy Florida beachside town, Mexico Beach is prime. Once you visit, it will be calling you every time thereafter.
