Travel to Lafayette, Louisiana - Considered the French Capital of the U.S.

Center of Cajun Culture

Kimberly Cummings
Known as the French capital, Lafayette, Louisiana, is a very vibrant and extremely flourishing metropolis. Lafayette is home to Zydeco and Cajun music, Cajun cuisine and has always been referred to as the center of Creole and Cajun culture in the United States.

After having lived in Lake Charles, Louisiana for many years I became very familiar with Lafayette and often visited the city for its sites and unique atmosphere. When living in Louisiana most people travel all around the state in order to become better familiar with the culture and enjoy the states history and attractions. Lafayette is by far the best city to enjoy not only the long list of attractions but take in the more laid back and relaxed tourist welcoming atmosphere.

There are many sites to enjoy in Lafayette including:

Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino is a huge horse-racing park which combines horse-racing and gambling very well. There are many great restaurants to choose from at the Downs including Blackberry's fine dining and a Cajun buffet. This attraction is well worth the visit and one that all the family can enjoy. Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino was the first real "Racino" built from scratch and it consists of approximately 750 sprawling acres. The Downs is located at 2235 Creswell Ln. Extension in Opelousas and for race information and directions you can call 866-472-2466.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is a breathtakingly beautiful and a wonderful sightseeing stop if your in to grand architecture. Built in the Romanesque style the grounds include a grand statuesque over 500 yr. old oak tree and a wonderful historic cemetery dating back to the 1800's. St. John's has a museum on the grounds that tells the parish's history and is full of interesting memorabilia and artifacts. Located at 515 Cathedral Street in Lafayette this cathedral is a thriving and welcoming haven for all tourists and locals. For more information call 337-232-1322

The Kart Ranch is another great family attraction in Lafayette. The fun center has a lot of great activities for all ages including mini-golf, batting cages, bumper boats, go-karts and even great food. The Kart Ranch is located at 508 Youngsville Hwy. 89 in Lafayette and anyone wishing more information on the ranch or discounts available should call 337-837-5278. The Ranch is open year round from 10AM through 11PM Mon-Sat and 10AM through 9PM on Sun. This place rocks and can make any take a full day to enjoy.

The Atchafalaya Experience is an exceptional outstanding view of the Louisiana swamps including it's untouched beauty. The swamp tour was started by a father and son team and accommodates every type of enthusiast from bird and nature lovers to wildlife photographers. The tour an exceptionally interesting and worthwhile experience that focuses on showing just how beautiful and unique the swamp truly is. The Atchafalaya has been listed as one of the top wilderness areas in the United States and these swamp tours are a must do for any tourist. There are at least two daily excursions (weather permitting), 7 days a week however you should call 337-277-4726 to make reservations and get directions and times. I have been and all I can say is don't forget your camera.

The Acadian Village is a 19th century authentic bayou town which was restored to its natural beauty and charm. The Village depicts the life of the Acadians who settled in southern Louisiana. The Village includes a blacksmith shop, chapel, general store and many charming homes. The chapel is available for nuptials and other services and the atmosphere is one of history come to life. The Village is a learning experience for all members of the family and the people are warm and friendly making the whole experience very educational.

Lafayette the city is the fourth largest city in Louisiana and houses many vibrant places downtown to enjoy such as fine dining restaurants, sports centers including the Cajundome which is home to the Ragin' Cajuns basketball team. Lafayette features a huge vibrant shopping network of malls, quaint specialty stores and old world Cajun artistry shops. The nightlife is exceptional and the city features all you could ask for in lodging from four star hotels to small relaxing bed and breakfast places.

I firmly invite anyone to find a more welcoming city which incorporates all that is Louisiana and headlines the Cajun heritage so well.
