Travel Obsession: Is it Really Good for You?

Julie DiBartolo
Ever expanding tourism business is one of the most profitable businesses in the world many countries survive and prosper on this type of business alone. The profit potential for tourism business has grown steadily in parallel with the growth of leisure time, discretionary income and boredom of workers. Money is made to be spent, but time and energy should be invested wisely. Stop and think for a second what would benefit you the most in the long run, what should you spend your energy on, perhaps you want to start your own small business (the game is fun, I promise you), or buy that house you always dreamt of buying (a safe net for your retirement). You can always travel when you are retired, when you have plenty of money to waste on expensive hotels, fine meals, theaters and balls.

So you are broke and bored out of your mind, you are planning your next vacation. You want the adventure, you want something to tell your friends back home. You want to be perceived as man/woman of the world. Life is all about new interesting experiences! You want to see new places, you want to experience new cultures. You want to check out the locals and show off yourself. And you have couple of weeks to do that.

Travelling within your own country will save you few troubles, but how can you experience new culture home? Travelling abroad will present new challenges. The first difficulty you will encounter is the foreign language and difficulty in communication with locals who if you are lucky will find you extremely trying and boring, or, if you are not lucky, will think you are stupid and will try to take advantage of you. You will spend some time admiring the local architecture (most of us are born connoisseurs of art, design and history) and you will go to local malls to shop.

You will experience the night life. Hit the local bars and get wasted. Hook up with as many people as you can. Make new acquaintances you will never see again to populate your facebook with. Overall a satisfying experience if all goes according to plan: if the luggage is not stolen, if you are not mugged, robbed or assaulted, and if you are not handicapped in any way during your relaxing vacation.

What was the purpose of your travel? The travel channel can teach you many things about the history, art, culture and you get to see people in their habitat absolutely free. To further explore different cultures you can make reservation at the local ethnic restaurant. Did you know you can find all the stimulation and fun right where you are? That is if you are not lazy and have some imagination. Vacation is a poor remedy for boredom, the treatment is expensive and its therapeutic effects are short lived. You have to get to the bottom of the problem to fix it. Don't waste your time and resources. Find some real friends. Get yourself a new interesting hobby. Get involved in a community. Volunteer. Start your own enterprise. Life is a game and it is right under your nose.
