Planning is the foundation of a positive travel experience. What do you need to consider? Who is traveling with you? Is this a trip for husband and wife, a family, with friends, older adults? Are their special needs to consider such as diet, sensitivities or handicap accessibility. Taking these things into account makes all the difference not only in the planning stage, but also in having a positive travel vacation experience with lots of good memories.
Decide your destination. If you are planning to travel with others, make sure to discuss the destination in light of what each would like to happen on the trip. What are the expectations? If you are traveling with those who are not family or extended family, discuss and clearly decide what the costs entail and what cost each is responsible for. Who pays for gas, lodging, food, incidentals? Try to make this fair. Also, talk about financial obligations if someone, for any reason, has to back out once everything is booked. To make sure everyone is on the same page, write it all out and have each one sign what has been agreed upon.
While deciding on destinations, check choices online. If there is time, sign up for online or print newsletters, information and magazines from the state, city and specific destination. These will help narrow down what is available and makes planning much simpler. Do keep choices down to a reasonable few or all the information will just cause confusion and be a distraction in travel planning.
The destination is not the only factor to consider in travel planning for the vacation. You also need to consider the journey. Are you flying? Then you must consider what luggage to take and how to pare things down so the journey doesn't cost more than the vacation destination. Again, you need to consider the specific needs of everyone on the trip. Check out the airline's requirements and how well they will meet the needs or your particular group. Plan with these special needs in mind.
If planning to travel by car, your planning will take on a whole different aspect. Is the car large enough for your group. Should you take your car or rent a car? Consider the advantages of each. Again, if the travel will take more than a day, you need to consider stops along the way, such as food, and lodging in your travel planning. What about tourist shop stops or points of interest?
Do not be afraid to call ahead to make sure that special needs can be accommodated. Nothing will destroy a trip faster than having one member of the group get sick due to reactions or not having a positive experience because of inaccessibility.
How does your family or group like to travel? Do you like to head straight to the vacation destination or do you like to stop to shop or check out points of interest along the way? This needs to be discussed ahead of time and compromises made so everyone can enjoy the trip without undue stress.
Choose your destination.
Consider the needs of all who are traveling together.
Be willing to compromise.
Decide, on paper is best, who is responsible for what financial costs.
Finally, vacations never go quite like we want them too, even with lots of planning. Be willing to compromise and be willing to "roll with the flow" when things don't go as planned. A positive attitude, along with travel planning, is one of the best ways to have a positive travel vacation experience and to returning hope with lots of good memories.
