Travel to Potsdam Near Berlin, a Beautiful Baroque City in Germany

I lived in West Germany for several years, I was even over there when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Once the wall came down people were allowed to travel into what once was East Germany. Over time however the reunited Germany has improved destinations within what was the Eastern part of Deutschland.

Potsdam is about a half an hour train ride from downtown Berlin and the town of Potsdam is a frequent travel destination for many Berliners as well as others that like little day excursions. Potsdam is the capital of the Brandenburg region. It has a exquisite baroque schloss or palace and beautiful picturesque gardens. All of which is best known as Park Sanssouci. The palace Sanssouci is a magnificent place to visit and to see everything it takes almost a full day to see everything.

Friedenskirche Sanssouci is a beautiful old church and sits in Sanssouci Park, it also is the home to classical concerts.

The Schloss Cecilienhof was the residence of Crown Princess Cecilie. Cechienhof was the place that the Allied powers met in 1945 after victory to decide the future of Europe. The talks were finished with the signing of the Potsdam Agreement which divided Germany into the East and West sides and demilitarized the country. Visitors can view the conference area with a table that came straight from Moscow for the event and the chambers of the people that attended the agreement, Stalin, Truman and Churchill were two that attended.

Potsdam is also known for its movie area, specifically the Babelsberg Film Studios in which many German productions were cast. The Film Museum is exquisite and well worth time to see even if your too young to remember any of the old German films. The Film Museum is often passed over for the Filmpark, which is the actually studios however the museum is modern and well worth seeing for anyone who is an old film buff. All the items are authentic and collections are very detailed including clips of silent movie classics.

Potsdam is a historic and beautiful travel destination it has literally dozens of quaint stores and cafes, as well as beautiful villas and churches. Brandenburger Strasse is one of the main thoroughfares for shopping in Potsdam.
Potsdam is basically an island which is surrounded by several lakes. The Havel River runs through the town which makes the city full of parks and beautiful garden areas. Potsdam is one of the most expensive places to live, in the former East Germany region. However its still a very sought after place to move to for many Germans.

Much of the Potsdam area was at one time inaccessible to everyone however many areas have now been fully restored. The Brauhaus restaurant has playground that at one time was apart of the no man's area just outside the Berlin wall and was designated to be an area that you could still shoot someone.
