Travel to San Antonio, Texas

I've lived in San Antonio for about seven years. San Antonio is a large city located in south Texas that has a population of 1.1 million people(according to Yahoo). The capital of Texas, Austin, is located about ninety miles to the north. San Antonio has its good sides as well as bad sides, just like any major city. The climate can be quite hot in the summer but mild in the winter. Allergies can be quite severe in this city. I read somewhere online about the worst cities for allergies, and I believe San Antonio was rated number twenty one or so. Mountain cedar is an example of one of the many pollens that exist here.

One of the nice things about Texas is that houses are still affordable. You can buy condos for around one hundred thousand dollars, and a house for two hundred thousand dollars. I'm sure the numbers could be lower than that, if you shop around. Another reason why this is a nice place to live is because of the fun attractions you can visit. Some fun places where you can go are the Riverwalk, Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld, Six Flags, the Alamo; etc. Rumor has it that Disney World may come here. But it is just a rumor.

The Riverwalk is located in the downtown area, and it is a nice place to shop and see some sites. You can also take a boat ride down the Riverwalk, which is about a mile long. Or just walk, your choice. Schlitterbahn is a waterpark that is located in the New Braunfels area, which is in the northern part of the city. The Travel Channel has rated it as the number one waterpark in the world. SeaWorld is full of animals, rides, water attractions, and much more. And finally, Six Flags is another theme park that specializes in roller coaster rides, animal shows, and water attractions. The Alamo is an old fort that held off the Spanish army for quite some time; it's located near the downtown area, as well.

Now, for some of the bad things about San Antonio. I mentioned heat earlier, and I meant it. In the summer months it is usually in the high nineties to low hundreds. It is also usually quite humid, which when mixed with heat can be quite uncomfortable. Air conditioning is a must in this city. I remember one time it was a hundred degrees in February. Of course, this is an extreme but still.

Another not so great thing is transportation. You should definitely consider purchasing a car if you decide to move here. There is public transportation, but it doesn't seem to be very good. You also have bike lanes in parts of the city, but I believe these to be quite dangerous because cars tend to ignore cyclists. The traffic can be quite bad as well. Ah, now lets talk about the storms. San Antonio is not technically in Tornado Alley, but it can have quite violent storms. Hail, tornadoes, high wind, flooding, lightning, and even hurricanes can affect this city. Though floods seem to be the hazard that happens more often than not.

Okay, the hurricanes are usually tropical storms or depressions long before they hit this city, but they can still cause a lot of damage. Another issue is the underground aquifer, which is one of the main sources of water for the city. Unfortunately, the larger the city grows, the more water becomes necessary to sustain the population. If San Antonio goes through a drought, you can expect water rationing. So don't become too attached to your lawn.

As you can see, San Antonio has it's ups and downs. However, it's not a terrible place to live. As for race, about half or so of the city is Hispanic and the other half Caucasian. There are other races here, of course, but Caucasian and Hispanic make up the majority. Oh, and the Texas accent is present, but it's not everywhere. When I lived out of state, people were usually surprised that I didn't have an accent. Not everyone develops an accent, people. Nor does everyone wear cowboy hats.
