Wallis, also known as Valais, is home to the largest glacier in the Alps, the Grosser Aletsh glacier, which has become one of the areas main attractions. In addition to the glacier the area offers fantastic hiking trails and easy accessibility for trip to other countries.
Too visit Grosser Aletsh, there are several different train and gondola routes to choose from. Each route takes you to a different viewing point surrounding the glacier. There are several different walking trails around the area (some of them necessary to reach a viewing point from your train or gondola) that can make for a pleasant sight seeing walk.
Each point is able to give you a new perspective of the area, and a new breath taking view.
Wallis is located in the southern part of Switzerland, on the border of France and Italy. Due to it's proximity to the two countries Wallis is a melting pot of culture. It is not uncommon to encounter those who speak French, Italian, or German as their native tongue while traveling throughout the area. Day trips to both France and Italy are also very easy to make given the closeness of Wallis to the borders. A day trip to France or Italy in most cases is even more feasible than making a trip to other parts of Switzerland.
If you aren't interested in making a trip to neighboring countries, you can find plenty of things to do to fill your time while remaining in Wallis. Wallis is home to over thirty different hiking trails. Ranging in difficulty from easy fifteen minute hikes to difficult treks that can take you all day all of the hiking trails are sure to take you to a new breath taking location.
There are also a variety of restaurants and other cultural activities in the area that you can participate in to fill your time. In Saas Fee you can have dinner at the worlds highest revolving restaurant, or you can make a visit to the Stockalper castle in Brig.
There are plenty of resorts and hotels in the area for lodging. During peak tourist time however the better ones can fill up quickly, so if you know you plan on making a trip to Wallis, try to book your hotel or resort as soon as possible to make sure you aren't left without a place to stay, or are forced to stay somewhere less than perfect.
