1. The Travel Itinerary
This is your proposed route of travel including the duration of stay at each place. Whether your trip consists of tourist spots or business meetings it helps to have an itinerary so that your days are organized properly. A detailed itinerary will help you to plan your days ahead so that there are a few surprises and no time is lost in procuring things that should have been with you. You can also leave a copy of your itinerary back at home so that others will know your location at all times.
2. Clothes
It can be difficult to choose between your clothes. However, it best to select the clothes according to the weather forecast for the various places that you will be visiting. Ask your travel agent for this information. Pack the clothes most suitable for those weather conditions. Give preference to the clothes that will not wrinkle easily and that can be washed and maintained easily. If any special occasions are involved then you should carry clothes suited to them.
3. Your Personal Items
Out of the many things that you will be packing for your trip there will be some that you can't do without. These include your toothbrush, passport, ticket, clean undergarments, driver's license, passport and of course money and credit cards. These items need to be easily accessible at all times. Therefore you should carry these items with you in your carryon bag and not in the luggage. Even in the carryon bag you need to keep your ticket and passport so that they can be immediately found when you need them.
4. Medication and Prescriptions
If you take any medications regularly then you will need to carry them along. Those that you will need frequently should be in your carryon bag. Also consider taking some necessary over-the-counter medicines for common ailments. If you are allergic to any specific conditions that you may encounter during your trip then you need to have the allergy medicines with you. Also consider taking insect repellents and sunscreens if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors.
5. Maps and Directions
If you plan to travel a lot on your own then study and carry the maps of the areas you will be visiting. Similarly specific directions will help you do save a lot of time and visit a lot more places or spend more time at your favorite spots. The worst thing is to get lost or lose your way frequently.
6. Suitable Shoes
Unless it is a very short trip you will obviously visit different types of places and be involved in different types of activities. You will need different types of shoes for simple sightseeing and sports activities like hiking or trekking. If you need to do a lot of walking then make sure that the shoes are well worn out and comfortable. Trying out new shoes during your trip can be most inconvenient.
7. Security of Luggage
You should secure your luggage by locking them. Also take spare keys along with you and keep them in a separate bag. This will ensure that you don't face any problems in case you lose the original keys.
8. Large Tote Bag
Pack a large sized tote bag in your suitcase which will be very useful to carry any purchases you make during the sightseeing tours. You can use this as additional luggage that you will need for carrying your souvenirs back home.
9. Labels and tags
Usually many travelers' suitcases and bags look alike and your luggage may be picked up by someone by mistake. Therefore, it is helpful to put labels or tags on your luggage. It will also be helpful if all your tags and labels are of a similar color or shape. Also you can put your name on the labels and tags for better identification. However, putting your address is not considered safe. The airlines have their own identification to locate your luggage if they get lost.
10. Necessary Insurance.
You should take insurance whenever necessary especially if you are renting cars. Also make sure to check the rented car for damages before renting it. Make sure that any pre-existing damages are accurately noted down.
