Travel Tips for the Fall Wine Season

Bill Hanks

During the hot summer season is a great time to start making plans for wine tours this fall. Wine tours are excellent ideas for weekend getaways. This article will give you some suggestions for planning a wine tour escape this fall.

Plan in Advance

Many wineries have special events planned. They offer everything from picnics, bands, tastings and star gazing. Most individuals like to leave early in the morning and hit 3 to 5 wineries during their trip. Some will even stay overnight and make an entire weekend trip. A good idea is to include stops at covered bridges, festivals, flea markets and museums. Ohio and Indiana have many of these in the fall. Herman, Missouri is also another great area to visit.

Select your route. Decide where to start from and finish at. Check your route for wineries along the way. Contact those wineries and find what they have to offer on the fall weekends. Make sure you get the times and dates they are open. Have them place you on their email lists. This is an excellent way to keep up to date.

Prep for your Trip

Some wineries will let you bring in food to eat with your wine. Others may not let you. Load a cooler with your favorite snacks. If you plan to travel overnight, make hotel reservations. By booking in advance, you won't waste time searching for a room during your trip. You might even get it cheaper. Another good idea is to carry lawn chairs with you.

Who Goes

Some wineries are very family friendly. I have seen wineries that give horse and wagon rides and even pumpkin picking. Others will only host adults. Wine tours are excellent ideas for adults that need some quality time together.

Different Tastes

Everyone is different in their taste for wine. Some like sweet wines while others like a dry wine. Then there are wines that are in between. Wine sampling is a great way to find out your preferred taste. I always suggest a cheese or cracker with your wine tasting. You will be amazed at the different types. Wines are not only made from grapes. They are made from fruits, rice and barley. Most individuals will select one wine and stay with it. I suggest sampling others, too.

Buy and Take Home

If you find a wine you enjoy, buy a few bottles and take them home. You can store these for future use. They also make great display items for your home. Wines also make great gifts for the holiday season. Many times you can find a deal on your purchases.

It's the harvest season, and IMO that is the best time for visiting wineries and vineyards.
