Travel Tips for Seniors on Vacation in Florida

Sabah Karimi
While Central Florida attracts thousands of visitors year round, knowing how to survive the summer season requires some extra attention for senior citizens. Seniors who choose to vacation in sunny Florida during the months of June through September will encounter heat waves and tumultuous weather. From thunderstorms to peak humidity levels, traveling can become uncomfortable and even distressing. Here are some key travel tips for seniors in Florida:

Wear light-colored clothing

This is especially important from the hours between 10 a.m.-4 p.m when the sun is strongest. Light cottons and linen material are ideal since these allow skin to breathe and will not stick to the skin. Dark colors can absorb heat and will instantly cause a rise in body temperature. Canvas hats or visors are a great way to shield the face and neck area too; just be sure these are lightweight as well.

Stay in the shade

Staying indoors is a wise idea, especially when temperatures reach beyond the 85-degree level. Be sure to check the weather forecast each day to find out what the day's highs and lows are expected to be, and plan activities around air-conditioned places as often as possible! Central Florida offers plenty of venues, resorts, and attractions that are completely indoors. Avoid open-air promenades and other walkways until the late evening.

Wear plenty of sunscreen

Aging skin is particularly vulnerable to skin damage, and this can elad to age spots, skin discoloration, increased wrinkles, and excessive dryness. Applying sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading outside is a good idea.

Eat light foods throughout the day

Along with plenty of fresh water, it's essential that seniors stay well-hydrated and receive plenty of nourishment. Elevated heat levels can lead to indigestion and dehydration fairly quickly; eating light foods including fresh fruit, vegetables, and dry crackers can help alleviate discomfort from digestion. Florida is home to plenty of citrus fruits and exotic options! Having water readily available will help balance out body temperatures too. Reducing salt intake will also prevent water retention and discomfort.

Take a nap

Too much heat can cause stress on the body, and taking a nap may help to recover that much-needed energy. Ensuring that seniors get enough sleep at night is also important for general functioning. A siesta after lunch isn't far from the norm in Florida! Take the time to create a comfortable space for napping.

Enjoy outdoor activities in the evenings

From gardening to running errands, it's best to keep outdoor activities to a minimum during the day and enjoy some fresh air after sunset instead. Seniors can take part in outdoor events and activities with ease after sundown. Just be sure to carry enough bug spray and drink fresh water during those especially humid nights.

Pack well for travel

If you're heading out on a roadtrip or traveling across town on the bus, be sure to carry enough bottled water to stay hydrated, along with a water spritz bottle to keep cool. Keeping a stock of supplies on hand will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip!

Seniors traveling in Florida can still enjoy the sun and climate with a few precautions. Since the Florida heat index can rise to dangerous levels, it's important for seniors to take some extra steps and stay safe. A Florida vacation can be enjoyable anytime of year!
