Research reviews online- If you are booking a tour, you'll want to make sure they can accommodate your needs. If you need special assistance due to health problems, you might just be miserable if they aren't familiar with your situation. Check reviews online to see if there are any other fellow seniors who recommend the tour. VirtualTourist and TripAdvisor are good websites that have restaurant and hotel reviews as well as tips written by real travelers.
Travel insurance- Travel insurance is great for people who invest their savings in an international trip package. Seniors are especially vulnerable because they don't have as stable of an income as someone working full time. If something goes wrong, travel insurance will help reimburse expenses like lost luggage, cancelled flights, etc.
Get a medical exam- Before traveling, make an appointment with a doctor. Depending on your travel destination, you may need vaccinations. You should also get a full check-up to make sure any health issues won't become serious while abroad. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure you have an extra pair (or two!) in case something happens abroad.
Take a cruise- Cruise lines are a great way to travel if you are not used to navigating new countries. For seniors who have sensitive digestive systems, the meals are held to a high sanitary standard, unlike some of the local food in exotic destinations. Cruises are also great for families if you want to bring along your children or grandkids. There is generally a show every night, and a program full of fun activities for everyone.
Go with a group- There are plenty of new travel companies and websites specifically marketed toward senior citizens. Here are some of the better ones:
Eldertreks- This company offers trip packages for the young at heart. www.eldertreks.com
50 Plus Expeditions- This site helps you find the perfect tour for your needs and budget. They list destinations and activities all over the globe. www.50plusexpeditions.com
Seniors Search- This is a directory of tour companies, campgrounds, hotels, and restaurants specifically geared toward active seniors. www.seniorsearch.com
Seniors Go Travel- This is an informative site that has travel articles for seniors, information about popular destinations, and even special promotions www.seniorsgotravel.com
