Traveling Advice: Rules for a Road Trip

Going on a road trip can be a great deal of fun. You get to see the sights and enjoy the car ride to your destination. You also get to spend quality time with friends and family if they are along for the ride. There are also some things you need to keep in mind as you prepare for that journey.

One pratfall of the road trip is that people have the tendency to gain weight on these little excursions. This is usually a result of the food they eat in route. Yes fast food is usually your best option, but that alone isn't the culprit. The driving force is the food you get at gas stations. Yes, you got a frozen fruit bar. However, just because there is fruit in it does not mean it is good for you, and you get one of those every time you stop. One way to curb this to pack your own snacks. This will cut down on the temptation to buy things that are not good for you. Granted, that means you need to pick out somewhat healthy snacks in the first place, but it should work. This should also save you money. Gas stations charge an arm and a leg for things at times.

If this a group trip, make sure everyone carries their weight and be considerate of others. Have everyone bring their own snacks. Divide up the driving equally. Let the driver pick the radio station. That way everyone gets a turn at picking the tunes. Get an idea of what everyone wants to do before you leave. Know if anyone in your party has particular places he or she wants to stop. This will help ease tensions and make the trip go flawlessly.

While everyone hopes that the road trip will go smoothly, make sure that you are prepared for emergencies. Have a first aid kit and basic car items like extra coolant and oil. If you took the spare tire out to make more room in your trunk, put it back in.

Also make sure that all your paperwork is up to date. There is nothing worse than getting pulled over in another state with expired plates. It happens. I was actually on a road trip from Indianapolis to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We didn't notice that the tags on the van we had borrowed were expired until we were almost all the way through Kentucky. That made the drivers very nervous as we made the trek to and from our friend's wedding.

Above all, have fun. The road trip is becoming a bit of a rare sight these days. Enjoy the time you can spend with your friends and family and enjoy the things you learn and see along the way.
