Traveling America's Roads - Blowing Rock, NC

A Bit of Americana... Southern-Style!

L.A. Stewart
Everyone loves nature's beautiful colors that each season brings but nowhere is it more stunning than in the village of Blowing Rock, NC. (Blowing Rock website )Voted "NC's Prettiest Town" by a poll of in-state professional travel writers, as well as being the town author Jan Karen supposedly based her famous "Mitford" book series on. Blowing Rock looks like a piece of Americana that seems to have fallen from a Norman Rockwell painting.

Main Street USA

Main Street is the life force of any small town and Blowing Rock is no exception. One thing that sets this town apart from the rest are the older, charming cottages that have been adapted into shops and stores that look as if they fell from the pages of a storybook. A favorite shop of many locals is in fact a cluster of several shops under one roof; the Martin House. Built in 1889 as a boarding house, it's the oldest building in Blowing Rock and now houses 12 quaint little shops, each more unique than the one before. Located next to the Martin House is Blowing Rock's City Park, the anchor of the town's community activities. Concerts in the park, complete with an old fashioned gazebo under old oak and maple trees, children playing on swings, and the occassional clank of a ringer from a game of horseshoes. Life is good in Blowing Rock!

Art In The Park

Something not to be missed is Blowing Rock's famous "Art In The Park". A series of juried arts and crafts shows held one weekend a month from May through October, many of the very best local and regional artist/craftspeople come to showcase their handcrafted pottery, jewelry, glass, fiber, painting and more.( Art in the Park website ) The quality of art and crafts found at this event is stunning! Each Saturday during Art in the Park is preceded by a romantic Sunset Stroll on Friday evening. With wonderful accommodations available from the highly respected Inn at Ragged Gardens to the Luxury Resort and Spa at Westglow, you'll never want to leave Blowing Rock.

The Extras

Golfing, performing arts, wonderful winter skiing, and fantastic year-round outdoor activities...you'll be able to experience it all. With camera in hand and binoculars in tow (for the numerous mountain vistas in the area) Blowing Rock is one travel destination you will not want to miss. Spring, summer winter and fall...try to visit during each season. You'll understand why generation after generation of visitors keep returning!
