Traveling with Children, an Introduction

A Parent's Guide to Hotels, Airports, Family Travel and Surviving Vacation with Youngsters

You can get to New Orleans with friends without breaking a sweat, and you plan Las Vegas outings in your sleep. But when your travels involve children, it requires more than a simple, but useful, Expedia search.

You've traveled as an adult. You know bars, clubs, watering holes and concert venues. But can you travel as a grownup? With youngsters in tow, travel plans require actual planning. Logistics, activities, entertainment, snacks, safety and health issues. When was the last time your travel itinerary addressed dietary concerns? With children, it will. Did you know most kids won't even pack a toothbrush on their own? It's true.

Traveling With Children Tip #1: know your kids. Issues at home will be magnified on vacation. Young or old, but especially young, a thorough understanding of your traveling companions helps reduce the risk of catastrophe.

Are your little ones restless? Try to limit travel time. Are the kids fussy eaters? Cut out the fancy restaurants. Do the kids have allergies? Sun sensitivity? Are they afraid of birds? The more details you consider ahead of time, the less chance you will face some unforeseen disaster.

For your first family foray consider a long weekend at a nearby, or familiar point of interest. Of course everyone wants to spend two weeks at Disney World, or in Hawaii, but it is better to warm up to that. Flying across country, or overseas, can test even the most enthusiastic and experienced traveler. Make sure your family is up to it with a trip or two closer to home.

On the flip side, you want to protect against getting overly cautious. The whole point of vacationing as a family is to have fun and spend quality time together. Sometimes our concerns can become stultifying, and may keep us from even leaving the house.

There is a vast, healthy mix of caution and ambition that every trip planner should employ. Start small, and with experience and close attention to detail you can start to incorporate additional days and attractions. In no time your family will be ready to seize the traveler's brass ring: the interstate National Parks tour.

Eventually, your family vacations will start to rival those lost weekends of your past. The memories you create with your children may well outshine the distant Vegas memories you can't completely recall, or talk about.
