Traveling in Comfort: The Secret is in the Socks

Joanne Eglash
You've got your trip carefully planned, from that first-class ticket on a major airline on the first leg of your journey to a limousine ride in from the airport to your chic hotel. Who could ask for anything more? Well, if you're wearing scratchy socks or sagging nylons, YOU can ask for something more -- and get it too, by choosing the perfect pair of socks or nylons!

Here's what to look for:
  • Durability: And if you've ever had "holey" socks, you know what I mean! Poorly made socks can result in issues like "big toe poking through end of sock" syndrome, ending up in blisters, bunions, and more! You might save money up front by paying less for cheap socks...but your feet pay the price AND your pocketbook does too (as you buy pair after pair!). Ditto for wearing nylons that sag, bag, and get runs when you touch them or turn around.
  • Comfort: Get soft socks of the best material, such as Jersey knit. Quality counts with nylons too, because itchy nylons can ruin your entire vacation. I've dined at a very prestigious restaurant, and neglected to enjoy the food in favor of secretly scratching my nylon-encased knees!
  • Created with your health in mind: With regard to nylons and stockings, consider compression hosiery. Graduated compression can enhance your circulation and alleviate concerns such as swelling ankles or varicose veins. They also can help maintain blood flow up your legs, particularly important on long flights or car rides.
Recommended brands:
  • Darn Tough Vermont socks. Made with Merino wool yarns, they're naturally anti-microbial and comfortable on even the longest journey. They last well, and come in a variety of cute patterns.
  • Futuro pantyhose. Futuro Energizing Pantyhose look beautiful and feel fabulous. This super-soft material, with reinforced toes, feels as if your legs are being gently massaged and soothed, perfect whether you're on your feet rushing to the check-in desk at the airport or sitting for long hours on a car seat. The graduated compression is designed to help your health on even the longest journeys.
