My best trip to Mexico was to Mexico City on vacation. I did it for the cost of airfare and food. How? I made friends with a few people in Mexico through my work and they offered to let me stay with them during my vacation. So, tip number 1 for a cheap trip to Mexico? Stay with some local people you know. This also has an added safety tip because they know what is safe and what is not safe for you to participate in - even when they are not around. The people I stayed with I knew from work for over 4 years and they had visited the United States as well. Lastly, the people I stayed with knew how to negotiate properly for the price of admission to various famous sites. For example, when we visited the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon I noticed that my hosts did not pay the posted price. When I asked, I was told "That is the price for tourists. We are natives!"
Secondly, in order save money on flights, your best bet is to be flexible in your timing. I know this is not possible for everyone due to work and school arrangements, but it truly is the best way to fly cheap. On the way to Mexico from Minneapolis, there is always a stop over and plane change in Houston. Well, the flight from Houston to Mexico City was overbooked and the airline asked for volunteers to be bumped. No one volunteered. I waited a while and then started negotiating my price for being bumped. I ended up with a free ticket, free meals, and an free overnight stay in a hotel all for catch a flight 15 hours later. In the meantime, I got to explore a little around Houston.
Being flexible also helps in shopping online for flights. If you are flexible, you can try out various combinations of flight arrivals and departures on an airlines website (for example, www.nwa.com) in order to find the best deal. Sometimes, being able to leave a few hours earlier or later can save several hundred dollars.
Lastly, if you are going to visit Mexico this summer and want to do visit on a tight budget, consider NT going to the more popular locations like Cancun and Acapulco. Go to less visited locations such as Tampico or Merida. Both have their tourist locations, but they are not the most visited locations. This results in lower cost hotels, etc...It also means you will usually need to find safe transportation from the airport to those locations.
