Traveling with Older Children

backlash
Traveling with older children presents different issues than traveling with babies or toddlers. The advantage is that they are independent (so do not need carrying) but in a way this independence is a problem. They can wander off, and, even worse, they can become bored. Boredom is probably the biggest threat to enjoyable travel.

To some extent the method of transport can make a difference to the strategies available. If you are driving it is possible to ensure that favorite games, electronic equipment and music are on hand. If you plan to break up the journey, preferably at places of interest, then driving is a practical solution - but far easier if there are two adults so one of you can keep an eye on the children and help minimize disruptions resulting from boredom.

The main problem with traveling by car is that it is not always practical. Trains can be a good option as it is easy for children to move around and you can pay attention to keeping them amused. Perhaps the biggest problem is that if they do become bored and fractious then this happens in a public place as opposed to the privacy of your own car.

Flying has particular issues. The limits on hand luggage can mean it is hard to take everything needed onto the plane. The scope to move around maybe limited and the in-flight entertainment not to the taste of children. Having said that many airlines make a particular effort to deal with children and some provide books, magazines and coloring sets.

Another problem is if the meal times do not meet the needs of your child. In this case, the best solution is to take suitable snacks. Special children meals can be ordered on some airlines if pre-ordered. What is available changes so you should always check with the airline and book one that seems child friendly if you the choice.

Another way to make flying easier is to try to take an overnight flight. Sleeping children are not bored children.

Finally, always bear in mind that delays can upset the best plans. So always take more than you think you will need just in case.

Overall, as with traveling with very young children, it is essential to spend more time planning and packing. Also journey times will take longer, not just as you may end up with more breaks but also due to the need to organize, re-organize, check, count and then go back to find something that has been lost.
