Every city is different when it comes to traversing it. The use of public transportation versus private transportation is determined almost entirely upon three factors- safety, speed, and simplicity. Residents, above all, want to feel secure during travel. They want to arrive at their destination quickly. They want to go from Point A to Point B without hassle- no transfers or annoying circumstances. 1. Avoid Bus Stops In Frasier & Orange Mound

Memphis is a fairly dangerous city- unfortunately known for an average of one murder a day. Growing up in Memphis I learned of two locations to beware. In North Memphis there is Frasier, in South Memphis there is Orange Mound. Walking alone or frequenting bus stops at either is an exceptionally bad idea. Frasier is mostly slighted by drug traffic and violent crimes while Orange Mound is more a center for theft and gang activity. Evasion of either area is a wise choice.

2. Downtown? Take The Trolley!

Though more novel than convenient, there's something thrilling and nostalgic about the Memphis Downtown Trolley. If you're ever Downtown and in need of a comfortable means of travel- why not give the trolley a chance? As stated, you won't necessarily get to your destination any faster- but it's an experience worth having at least once.

3. Be Careful Around The Airport

In South Memphis you'll find the Memphis International Airport. While there is little to worry about in terms of service, the surrounding area can be a concern. Whether there is a stigma of robbery or mistreatment of unsuspecting newcomers or purely some coincidence- the area around and especially further south of the airport is something of a danger zone. To elude becoming a statistic, try not to be alone and pay attention to your surroundings. When making use of the airport services don't park your car somewhere off-site, this can end badly! It pays to not be cheap in this case.

4. Be Wary Of Cabs

The cab service in Memphis is hampered overall by the general demographic that uses the service. Most Memphians without private transportation will simply walk to their destination. Those with destinations too far will utilize a cab either because of the distance or a lack of clarity on the location. Because of this, cab drivers will often take entirely unnecessary routes to your destination while simultaneously hindering the trip in anyway to 'feed' the meter. While this is a common practice in some cities, it can be averted by a basic knowledge of locations and general routes throughout the city.
