The first decision you should make is whether to travel solo, with a partner, or in a group. Traveling solo can offer you many opportunities traveling tandem cannot. Solo travelers are more likely to speak to other people and make connections they otherwise would not have. If you have a friend next to you the whole way there is no need to seek outside associations. Traveling solo also affords you the ability to make all your own decisions without regard to what someone else wants. You need not then worry about ability, preferences, or funds of someone else. Being with a partner or group can provide feelings of safety. If you are more shy, and not likely to explore or make friends on your own, having friends with you may be more to your liking. There is also the added benefit of having someone to share relive those memories with once you get home. Traveling in a group can be great, especially for deciding what to do. If someone in the group does not like the day's plan, chances are they can find another in the group to join them in diverging. The one caution I make if you decide to travel with others is, pick your partners carefully. You will be spending a lot of time with them. Don't let other people ruin your vacation.
Next you need to pick where to go. If you have a destination in mind that you absolutely must see then it's all settled. You can start planning from there. If you aren't so sure where you will visit, then it's time to make that choice. This decision can be based on a number of things. If you decided to travel with others then you will need to see where everyone can agree on going. If you are going solo, then the decision's on you. There are two main choices: homeland or abroad. While another country can hold a lot of appeal, you can also look into what your own country has. You may be surprised at the treasures it can offer you. Another factor that needs to be looked at is funds. This may impact a lot of your decisions, starting with the where. You need to take into account airfare, currency exchange, rooming and food costs, among others. The state of the country is also something to look at. A third world country will not always be able to offer the same security a first world country can. On the upside, though, a third world country is usually less expensive and not as crowded. You will experience many new things and come into contact with much different cultures. This brings me to another point- Going off the beaten path. You will need to think about if you want to see the tourist-laden attractions, or experience something a bit different. You may be looking for a party scene, architecture, natural beauty, or museums and cultural arts. There are pros and cons to all kinds of destinations, and that will fall heavily upon your personal preferences. This is where research will really come in handy.
So, now you know where you are going, and with whom. The next few considerations you will need to make are just as important. There are a number of options as to where you room on your travels. Almost all destinations have a hotel, bed and breakfast, or hostel in the vicinity. Sometimes this decision is based solely on money, but if you have no restriction on that, then some other things may affect this decision. A hotel usually offers (hopefully) a clean bed, private bathroom and shower, and relative solitude. A B&B can offer a homier option than the hotel. It is usually privately run, and may offer a home cooked breakfast. It may also come with a curfew and a shared bathroom. A hostel is usually more of a dormitory style lodging. It can have any number of beds in a room, ranging anywhere from 2-20. The bathrooms can be shared by room or by floor. The hostel may have a common room and a self-serve kitchen. Hostels come with a few more warnings then do hotels or B&Bs. They may impose a curfew, they may not be as clean, they may be noisy and make relaxing difficult, and they may have a time during the day where you need to vacate the premises for them to clean. Researching and booking your hostels in advance of your stay can help avoid these difficulties. Hostels are wonderful place for lone travelers. You will be rooming with a lot of other lone travels. In a hotel, chances are you will not come into contact with other travels and make friends. The other big upside to hostels is price. They can be extremely affordable and the staff is usually very helpful.
A few other logistical issues should still be worked out. The time of year you travel can affect it. If you get an allotted time off from work, then you need not ponder. If you can have more discretion on this fact you will want to consider a few things. Make sure you look at the seasons of the place you are visiting. Do not expect to go skiing in the summer. Busy seasons of travel may or may not be desirable to you. The months from June to August tend to bring about a lot of other fellow travelers. This can cause uncomfortable crowds. The downside to traveling on off-peak times is that not all attractions may be open. This can usually be checked in advance.
Traveling should not elicit stress. You may decide to go the adventurous route and climb a mountain, or just sit by a pool and read all day. Either way, this should be what will make you happy. Doing the proper research ahead of time can help avoid a lot of problems. There are merits to all different sorts of vacations. You may not take any of this advance and just jump on the first available plane. It is up to you, as the traveler, to decide what is best for you.
