Traveling in the Winter Months - How to Be Prepared and What to Do

Shawn Thomas
As the winter travel season approaches there are many things to keep in mind. Often times when it is raining many people go ahead and travel. However, it is cold and icy it is dangerous to travel and best stay at home. In rare instances however there are times where people need to bear the conditions and to do so need to be prepared. Some parts of the country especially in the north to the weather is especially harsh. Therefore people need to know and understand what to do when bad situations arise.

The first thing that one needs to do is to wear enough clothes. The most important piece of clothing is a hat as 90% of all body is lost through the head. It is also important to wear something to cover the face and the mouth along with the hand. You could wear a ski mask, water resistant boots and a water resistant coat along with several layers of clothing.

If you are going to be traveling on the road on a plane or by other means it is important to check the weather reports. You do not want to travel in conditions that are extremely hazardous. You do not want to travel on ice covered roads and bridges and in low visibility conditions. You should let others know of your travel plans so that they can be prepared in case something was to go astray. It is important to bring tire chains and a cell phone along with you if you are going to be driving.

Emergency supplies in a vehicle are a must and there must be enough food and water for everyone. Some important things to bring include an ice scraper, sand or road salt, flashlights, flares, tire chains, jumper cables, tools, a signal mirror, and a first aid kit. Understanding the essentials is important. You should check your car to make sure everything is in it before heading out on your trip.

In the event that you do become stranded it is important to remain in the vehicle or near the vehicle if you need to leave it for any reason. You will need to keep the windows open slightly so that fresh air can get in and you do not get poisoned. Never abandon the vehicle and go searching for others. If you were to do this you could suffer from hypothermia and frostbite. If you start shivering, become confused, and have memory loss you may have hypothermia. If your hands become white or yellowish-gray, and you have extreme numbness frostbite can be occurring. If either of these do occur you could suffer permanent loss of function and health problems.

You must be prepared when starting out on any travels in the winter. Airlines will often cancel flights when conditions are too severe and you should also cancel any travel plans by car when conditions are too severe. If you must travel you must be prepared and know what to do when problems arise.
