Travelling to Vienna, Austria

Erik Van Tongerloo
Vienna is the main capital of Austria and a paradise for every traveler. I visited this city many years ago and this is really a place I will never forget. Vienna offers you almost everything you can imagine and especially for people who like classical music. That is why this city can be called "the city of Music".
Vienna is the largest city of Austria and situated on the Danube River. It is one of the greatest historical cities in the world. There are a lot of beautiful buildings and the hospitality of the people in Austria is wonderful.

Vienna offers great opportunities for music lovers, and especially those who like classical music like Mozart, Opera music, and of course music of Johan Strauss.
Who doesn't know "The Blue Danube (An der schonen blauen Donau)" of Johann Strauss? It is one of the most popular waltzes of Vienna that almost everyone like to hear in Vienna. There is a lovely park with a statue of Johann Strauss and in the evening you can listen to the beautiful waltzes of Johann Strauss and you have to possibility to dance there too.

The Staatsoper and the Volksoper are "the places to be" for opera lovers and sometimes you can enjoy the typical Viennese Operetta.
Some other important places in Vienna for classical music are "the Wienermusicverein and the Wiener Konzerthaus where many concerts with work of Mozart and Strauss take place.

Of course Vienna is not only the city of the classical music but there are also lovely parks like "the Wienerwald, the Donaupark, the Shlosspark of Shloss Belvedere with the Vienna botanic gardens. Schonbrunn is one of the most beautiful places in Vienna with its beautiful Schönbrunner park. In this park you can enjoy the beautiful flowers; it is one of the most beautiful in the world.

The palace of Schönbrunn is well known in the whole world. It is one of the most beautiful baroque Palaces in Europe. This palace was the summer residence of Sissi and you can visit there a lot of rooms with memories of Emperor Franz Joseph and Sissi who reigned from 1848 to 1916. Who didn't saw the romantic movies of Sissi with Romy Schneider? Almost everyone because these are well known worldwide and in this Palace everyone can admire a lot of their belongings.

Other important buildings and monuments are :
- the St. Stephans Cathedral : a baroque church from 1688 which every tourist like to visit. There are many beautiful monuments in this ancient Cathedral and the crypt tour can't be missed.

- The Spanish Riding school : a very beautiful baroque building where you can see the training of the Lippizan Horses. Maybe you are lucky to see a beautiful show of these horses in harmony with the music. Important to know is that these horses are not in Vienna during July and August.

- The Karlskirche(St Charles's Church) : this is the most outstanding baroque church of Vienna which is situated on the south side of the Karlsplatz. The Karlsplatz is "the place to be" for shopping and you can enjoy their also the beautiful Austrian atmosphere. If you walk through this street there are many attractions like people playing some typical Austrian music with an accordion.

- The Clockmuseum : you can see here all kinds of clocks from history; even astronomical clocks and clocks of the Middle Ages. Nice to see is also the modern writshwatch and the Black Forest cuckoo clock.

- The Donauturm : these tower has a height of 252 meter and you can have an amazing view of the entire city Vienna. It is a nice place to take a panorama picture of Vienna.
There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy the Sacchertarte, a delicious sweet of Vienna.

- The Hofburg : the treasury room with imperial jewels of the Hapsburg dynasty and also the Sissi museum is there.

- The Prater with the popular Riesenrad (Giant Ferries Wheel) : a nice place for children but it is also a nice place for adults.

Of course there are a lot more interesting buildings but it is impossible to mention them all.

Vienna is also a nice good place for food. The Wienershnitzel is the most popular dish and mostly served with French fries.
Another important dish is Tafelspitz. This is very lean boiled beef which is traditionally served with boiled potatoes and Apfelkren (a mixture of horseradish, cream and apple).

Vienna has also a lot of delicious desserts like Apfelstrudel, Palatschinken and of course the well known Sachertarte (a chocolate cake from the Sacher Hotel and is well known worldwide. The Sachertarte is a sweet I can recommend to eat in Vienna. There is no country in the world where you can find the same quality of this dessert.

If you visit Vienna you can best do it in spring or in September or Oktober; these months are the best ones time for visiting this beautiful city.

I advice you to avoid travelling to Vienna in July and August If you want to enjoy the classical music or you want to visit the Lippizaner horses because in these months there are almost no concerts and the Lippizaner horses are not there.

Vienna is a nice place to visit for every traveler.

"Main capital"? Maybe of the Austro-Hungarian empire, but now, I think just plain "capital."

A bewitching city it is, with a special light along with the pastries and palaces and music.

Austria is a lovely country. Although I've not actually been to Vienna, I've been to Salzburg and I definiately think that Austria is one of the most beautiful countries I've been to in Europe.

A fabulous article. Makes me want to travel there!!! While recently working on a family tree, I discovered that my father's parents were both born near Austria, although they're not Austrian. Also, the thing I've discovered about Eastern Europeans is that they are all extremely well educated in the arts, making them appreciate it a lot more.... something I wish was given more attention in our North American schools. I really enjoyed this article :)

Erik this brings back wonderful memories. I adore Vienna, though oddly enough what first interested me in it was John Irving's books.
