Treasure Box

Silver heart
on hinges breaks,
reveals four quarters,
crumbling flowers,
and a two-inch hollow bear
plastic, blue,
and broken into bits.

I remember still
the way it felt
to catch her,

as she tore apart
my little prize.

I can't remember
if we saw each other
much beyond that day,
it seems quite soon
she moved away.

A decade gone,
or maybe more,
I heard the numbing news:
a car crash took her life.

And now I hold the
plastic shards
and feel the final twist.

There's something missing.

The pieces just don't fit.
