Treasure Hunting Secrets and Locations - a Guide for the Modern Treasure Hunter

Dave Bryan
Almost everyone is a treasure hunter to some degree. Even the most wealthy among us would probably take the time to reach down and pick up a twenty dollar bill that someone else dropped. I found a ten dollar bill once and several dollar bills, not to mention a fairly large amount of change. Yes, mostly pennies, but even the pre-1982 pennies (and some of the 1982 ones) have more than double their value in copper. While walking through parking lots why not take that time to look down and see what what you can find?

Copper pennies can still be found in your pocket change. You can also go to the bank and buy rolls of pennies, sort out the copper ones and instantly double your investment! There are websites that can give you the current melt value of your change.

At this time, only pennies and nickels are worth saving. Before you rush out and start melting coins be aware that it is illegal under the current law. History has shown that this will change sometime in the future when these coins have been completely removed from circulation. This happened with the pre-1964 silver coins and there is no reason to assume it won't happen with pennies and nickels. Nickels contain 75% copper and 25% nickel metal. Nickel metal is worth about two to three times the value of copper.

The value of these base metals have nowhere to go but up. Base metals have performed better than gold or silver over the last several years. Do a little research on the Internet and you may be surprised on the current situation surrounding all of the metals.

There are other treasures laying around for you to find that you may not have thought of. I have complied a list of some of them for you to be aware of.

1.Diamonds and other precious stones. Diamonds in the parking lots? Not that far fetched. Consider a woman that hits her wedding ring on the handle of the car door and doesn't realize she just knocked her two caret diamond out of her wedding ring. How would you find such a treasure? Just look for something that shines more than normal while the sun is out. With some practice and a keen eye you may get lucky.

2.Meteorites. If you live close to a desert or area where the ground cover is missing you could find a piece of a meteorite. The three kinds are stony, metallic, and a mixture of the two. Ones that contain metal can be detected with a metal detector. The stony ones are harder to find and are worth more. All of them can be sold for a good price.

3.Indian artifacts. Everyone know about finding arrowheads. A word of caution; it is unethical and sometimes illegal to dig for Indian artifacts for personal gain. Finding a few arrowheads lying on the ground or in streams may be alright, but stay away from digging up sites without the proper observation of a trained Archaeologist.

4.Natural gemstones. Gemstones of value can be found in streams and in other mining locations. Make sure you have permission from the owner or that you are on public land where it is alright to dig.

5.Gold mines and panning. It is legal to pan for gold on most Federal land such as the many National Forrest's. Make sure you leave the land as you found it. You may even be able to file a mining claim if you find anything of significance. Do your research and make sure you are not digging on someone else's claim. High dollar metal detectors make it possible to find gold even in dry dirt.

6.Old coins and historical items. With a good metal detector and permission to look you could find all sorts of coins, historical items such as Civil War artifacts. Again, keep in mind the legality of where you look for these things.

7.Old outhouse locations. All kinds of things can be found by digging up locations that at one time contained an outhouse. Bottles, guns, and coins are just some of those things. If you have access to a place where an old house was located there could be several places on the same property. One method to locate there treasure holes is to push a metal rod into the ground until you find dirt that is looser than the surrounding area. Don't worry about sanitation problems, the ground is safe and doesn't smell anymore due to decomposition.

There are treasures everywhere waiting for you to find them. You could be literally sitting on a gold mine and not know it. The problem is there are more locations that don't contain treasure than ones that do so you have to be the first one to narrow down the prospects.
