The full name for shin splints is 'Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome' . The shin splints occur with irritation and inflammation of the connective tissue that connects the muscle to the bone in the lower leg. Shin splints can be very painful and difficult to treat. There are a few possible causes of the symptoms of shin splints and a good medical exam with X-rays to determine if there is a hairline fracture in the tibia is a good idea if symptoms that persist.
The condition has been affecting my wife for months and this has prompted me to look into the condition a little more. I played basketball and track as a high school athlete and never had symptoms of shin splints. I also ran 3 to 5 miles a day for over 20 years and again was fortunate not to have the problem. The treatment of shin splints is pretty straightforward starting with rest. This is probably the most difficult thing to do because exercising caused the problem and those people don't want to stop exercising. She has seen an orthopedist who actually did not diagnose shin splints and recommended a neurologist. I am a medical doctor and former runner and this is indeed shin splints. The MRI was normal so there are no fractures.
The other treatment is ice or cold compresses and there are products on the market and one is called Bio Ice that comes in a patch or a roll on. The third treatment is compresses and there are tons of those on the internet. The last thing is an oral anti-inflammatory such ibuprofen.
The treatment usually works especially if the rest advice is followed. Understanding the condition is most beneficial and to that end this is an excellent source of information available online.
