Treat Your Waiter with Respect

Andrew Smith
When going out to a restaurant a person needs to both enjoy their time there and the food as well. They also need to remember that the people working there work hard to server them and that everyone makes mistakes. You need to remember that if a mistake does occur that you understand that they happen and don't take it out on the person who is serving you the food. Too often in a restaurant I will find that the people at the table will take out their anger of the waiter who is just serving the food when the cook is the one at fault. The other thing to remember is that even if the cool makes a mistake, you have to understand that they work very hard to serve you and that they don't feel good about making a mistake themselves and while you may be upset, you have to be understanding at the same time.

The waiter works hard and requires your tip to bring home enough money for them to live on. If you decide to not give them a tip because of your anger with the cooks in the restaurant, that would not be fair to them. People have to realize that if they do this, the waiter may essentially get nothing for the work that they have already done. You also need to make sure that you tip the right amount and feel good about your tip before you leave the restaurant. The simple rule of thumb is that you should tip at least twenty percent of the cost of your meal. I understand that you may not have a lot of money, but in the long run twenty percent is not that much extra and if you think about it, you would want to treat the waiter with the same respect you would like.

I understand that some people get annoyed by the attitude of some waiters and they feel that it ruins their mood, but they have to understand that a person could just be having a bad day. While I fully believe that a person should wear a smile and treat those who help pay their salary with respect always, sometimes the stress of life can spill over and they can act in ways they don't intend. People also need to realize that a waiter does not get paid much even with the amount of tips they receive and on some days they don't even come away with minimum wage. Make sure that you always, always tip no matter what and if you can't tip twenty percent then you should tip as close to it as possible.
