Treating Baby for Diaper Rash

Ever since my son was a newborn he would get the worst diaper rashes. I don't know why he is so prone to this happening. I would make sure to change his diaper every time he would take a poop. But that didn't seem to make a difference. When I put him in daycare I prepared them that he will need a lot of diaper changes in a day. They told me they were changing him frequently but I have a feeling it still wasn't enough. So I would battle with the diaper rashes on a daily basis. Poor little guy's tushy was always red and irritated It would sometimes even get to the point of bleeding. That was the worst. He would scream every time I would try to change his diaper. He is so strong I actually call him little Bam Bam (from the cartoon Flintstones). He would keep his legs together so I couldn't clean him. I needed my husband to help me get his legs open. Even my husband who is also very strong would have a hard time getting his legs open. He was petrified of me cleaning him. Who could blame him. I wouldn't want someone wiping a sore on my tush either.

I called my sister who has three of her own children for some advice. The first thing she recommended I stop doing was using the harsh wipes which come full of soap that was probably stinging the sore. She suggested I take cotton squares with a little warm water to clean him. She also said not to wipe the tushy but to pat it. This way you aren't reopening any sores that just closed. This was great advice but I needed more. I called the doctor and she recommended I use an ointment called Nystatin to heal the wounds. She said I should put the Nystatin on his tushy and then load him up with a barrier using Desitin creamy. She said I should squeeze the tube of Desitin right on his tush. I would be using practically a whole tube for two diaper changes. Then when he needed a new diaper change I shouldn't clean him down to the skin, I should clean the poop off but keep the bottom layer of cream on his tush. The idea behind this method is to prevent reopening old sores that just healed. OK. This made a lot of sense.

Another thing I was doing wrong was letting his tushy air out. I thought the diaper was irritating him even more so I would let him run around the house without a diaper on. Wrong. The doctor told me this wasn't a good idea. It was quite the opposite actually. She told me I wasn't supposed to let air hit the sores for 24 hours. Oops, my bad. I guess I am still learning as a new mom. I guess you learn something new everyday. I think I will be a pro for my next baby.

This year my son is not in daycare anymore. I have a wonderful woman watching him and he has barely had any diaper rashes this year. This makes me think that the daycare center was not changing his diaper enough and that is was caused him to have so many bad rashes. I felt horrible about this. I still make sure he is changed often and I don't wipe him using rough wipes. I went out and bought Pampers Sensitive Wipes and they are wonderful. I highly recommend this product to anyone experiencing the same problems.
