Treating Colic: Gas, Tablets and Other Options

Marie Again
The world of colic is the most unexplained "disease" of infants. Supposedly lasting from around a few weeks after birth until 3 months, and sometimes beyond. This inconsolable crying for 3 or more hours a day for more than 3 days per week is bound to make a parent lose his or her mind! In desperation I visited my own pediatrician's office to look for help, with very little given except being told that it'll be over soon. Well, nearly 90 days or more of my little girl wailing her head off for hours a day doesn't seem like soon, so I sought out better options. Here's my journey through medications that my pediatrician said were fine to try. Sorry, there isn't very many.

Mylicon or Gas X for Infants
This product contains a drug called simethicone approved by the FDA to treat gas. I must say that this did help. My baby was able to release much bigger gas bubbles and it was easier to burp her, even though most of the time it just resulted in bigger farts! But the relief was minimal and didn't really last but maybe an hour. And you really can't continually medicate your infant. So I moved on to another product.

Hyland's Colic Tablets
A homeopathic approach to treating colic, it contains three different herbs. This is supposed to settle the baby and settle her stomach. This was useless. I saw absolutely no results of any kind from using these tablets. I've heard of mothers swearing by their teething tablets which are supposed to help an infant or child through teething, but these colic tablets were a waste of time for me. So, yet I move onto the last product I could find advertised for colic.

Baby Bliss Gripe Water
Another homeopathic solution for colic. I was a little worried that it would end up just like the colic tablets. This product has fennel and ginger in a lightly sweetened deionized water. It smells horrific and the only way my baby would ingest this was if it was mixed with a little formula or breast milk, but she did take it. The result was amazing! My little girl went from wailing cries, even while feeding, to completely silent and alert and even cooing! I really felt like supermom with this product. Thankfully, it was not hard to find. I found this at my local Walgreen's store. I was unable to find it at Wal-Mart, or our local, non-chain drugstores, but if you do have trouble finding this product, Walgreen's can order it for you, or the company does have a website you can buy it from: http://www.blissbymom.com/ .

So now I have a very happy little baby, no longer suffering from gas pains or tummy pains, whatever it was causing her colic. I'm a happy mom now, and when the little one does get started with that pain cry, I run right for the Gripe Water, and supermom is back in business!

I am a mommy, and very proud of it. My little girl is my everything in life right now. I am here on AC to try and get heard by other adults, and in the mean time try and make a little extra cash for our home.  View profile

The only thing that worked for our baby's colic was using the Happiest Baby on the Block book methods. Nice comparison of these products.
