S-adenosylmethionone otherwise known as S-ame and it's positive effect on depression victims was well documented as reported by Life Extension magazine back in 1997. Treating depression with S-ame has been a common practice in Europe for years but hadn't caught on here until the National Institute of Mental Health paid to have research on this done in a placebo controlled double blind study that involved people with major depression who had a resistance to drugs that were approved by the FDA.

During this study conducted at the Harvard Medical School 800 milligrams of the supplement S-ame was administered 2 times daily along with an SSRI anti-depressant, specially selected anti-depressant drug that inhibits the absorption of serotonin.

Those receiving doses of S-ame as compared to the placebo exhibited a 105% improved response from their anti-depressant pharmaceutical as well as a whopping 121% increased rate of remission from depression. This study concluded that in a 6 week period, those taking the twice daily doses of S-ame in addition to their SSRI had double the improved anti-depressant drug response as well as a much better remission recovery.

The Life Extension article goes on to state that the list of anti-depressant drugs that are approved by the FDA are too numerous to individually name, but the issue of their lack of effectiveness remains, and many individuals actually experience worse symptoms.

S-ame is naturally made by the body and elevates the glutathione level in our brain. Glutathoione is an amino acid that I've personally heard many nutritionists refer to as "essential" even though in reality it isn't. The reason for that is it's importance to the body during stress. Stress is a large part of depression so it makes sense that this supplement improves depression.

Historical researchers in the orient namely the Japanese, were able to uncover the fact that rats treated with S-ame supplementation were much less aggressive than those that were not. Italian researchers were also involved in a very detailed study wherein it was established that S-ame replenished levels of polymines in the brain. These are molecules within the brain that are decreased in those who suffer with depression.
