Treating Dry and Damaged Hair During the Summer

Mary Thatcher
Nothing is worse than having dry and damaged hair when you want to look your best during the summer season. Because hair is susceptible to the sun and elements, dry and damaged hair should be protected while it is undergoing restoration treatment. Both hair color and permanents contribute to hair damage due to the chemicals used in these beauty treatments. When basic care is performed on your hair, the condition of your hair will improve and grow healthier once you give it a break from chemical applications and heat styling. Treating dry and damaged hair is easy and can be done immediately if needed, especially if you need to look good for a special event the next evening.

To prevent any further damage to your hair if it is already colored, allow your present hair color to eventually wear out until your natural color shows again. Going natural with hair color is much healthier for hair rather than having to touch up the color every few weeks. Also avoid using hair dryers and hair irons on your hair. Straight hair looks good on practically every woman, and is easy to care for during the warm months of the year. If your hair has a natural bounce to it, and most hair does, allow your hair to grow to its natural form. Flat irons may give hair a glamorous look, but it is better to keep your hair looking well as it grows back to good health.

While you try to keep your hair looking good in its present state, here are two treatments you can use to get your hair looking healthy again:

Hot Oil Treatment

One of the best treatments for dry and damaged hair is a hot oil treatment. Olive oil is the best oil to use on your hair. Pour a handful of olive oil into the palm of your hair and rub it through your hair, starting at the scalp where the roots are, then massage downward, making sure the ends are saturated. Wrap a wrung-out hot towel around your head, making sure all of the hair is covered. Leave on for a total of 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the towel then shampoo the remaining oil out. Use a conditioner after shampooing and rinse out with cold water.

Conditioning

Hair conditioner does not have to be used after shampooing. Dry and damaged hair best benefits from conditioner when the conditioner is applied directly to the hair, then allowed to dry. Your hair can be either dry or wet when you apply the conditioner. Pour some conditioner into your hand, then start rubbing it into your hair at the roots. Massage in a circular motion, making sure your entire scalp is covered. Gently rub the conditioner through your hair so that it is completely covered, including the ends. If your hair is wet, allow the conditioner to dry completely. The best time to do this is before going out to spend a day at the beach or pool. The conditioner will protect your hair from the water and sand as you tan.
