Bites and stings
Bite wounds such as those made by humans, insects or animals are generally non venomous as there is no venom introduced into the body, stings like those from bees and wasps introduce venom to the body and are considered venomous, stings can also be caused by plants like stinging nettles. In the case of insect bites and bee stings Apis would be used, and would also be effective when the body is covered in large elevated, white welts after being stung. Arnica would be used if there is excessive bruising around the bite, more than usually expected. Silicea is used to draw out stingers or thorns if left or broken off inside the skin.
Handy house hold hints for bites and stings
Insects can be repelled by sponging an infusion of feverfew or rue onto the skin and letting it dry, lavender, eucalyptus, and citronella can be rubbed onto skin to repel insects such as mosquitoes. Washing your clothes in water containing wormwood other wise known as fleabane will prevent fleabites.
Treating insect bites at home
Dabbing damp salt or a vinegar cloth on the bite will ease it, rubbing raw onion or garlic on a bee or wasp sting will help with the irritation and curb the swelling. Oatmeal or banana paste can be used on tick bites after the tick has been removed, witch hazel is a powerful antiseptic and astringent and works very well for minor cuts and scrapes, and will stop the bite or sting becoming infected.
The pain caused by spider bites, scorpion stings and jelly fish stings can be alleviated by making a pulp or an infusion of wormwood, rue or sage leaves made into a compress and applied to the sting. Rubbing dock or plantain leaves onto a nettle sting will ease the sting, nettle and dock or plantain always grows in the same area.
Homoeopathy is natural and safe it is also very effective but some stings and bites must rather be treated by a medical practitioner, stings and bites like those from snakes or scorpion, it is very helpful to the practitioner if you could identify the snake that bit you or the scorpion that stung you as this will help in determining how poisonous the snake or scorpion is and the treatment can be given correctly. Medical advice should be sought when a bite becomes infected and a red line becomes visible as the infection spreads through the lymphatic system, this could be a sign of blood poisoning and could be lethal.
