Henoch-Schonlein Purpura not just one disorder, but a whole group of disorders. It is a form of vasculitis, which promotes the inflammation of blood vessels. The inflammation in the blood vessels will cause bleeding problems. The bleeding occurs in the capillaries in various places such as the skin, kidneys, joint areas, and the intestines. The dominant symptom showing Henoch-Schonlein purpura is a rash that is purple in the color. The rash will be present on the buttocks, and lower part of the legs. This condition also causes a stomach ache, joints that are achy, and in a few others, problems with kidneys.

This condition is most common in children and teens. However, adults can have it as well.

The causes of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura can be a result of having had some type of bacterial infection. There are also some antibiotics and allergy medicines that can bring on this condition.

Insect bites may cause the onset if they carry a bacteria that enters the bloodstream.

There are also the vaccinations that can induce the onset of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura.

Children that are white or Asian seem more prone to the development of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura than children of whom are black.

A diagnosis is made by taking a few tests. These tests include a urinalysis and throat culture, along with testing the kidney functions. A skin biopsy is also demonstrative in determining vasculitis.

The treatment of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura involves bed rest, anti-inflammatory medicines such as Advil or Ibuprofen, and a lot of fluids. This condition can sometimes become better by itself, but treatment is needed in order to prevent complications.

Treatment in the hospital setting is sometimes required if children ahve trouble getting enough liquids for hydration, are having difficulty moving from pains in joints, are having abdominal pains with a lot of bleeding, or are showing kidney problems.

The use of corticosteroid drugs that will help deter any complications is uncertain. This is due to the fact that corticosteroids have a great number of side effects that can be very serious. So using these for treatment is between you and your pediatrician or regular doctor.

The outcome of HSP is usually good once it runs its course. The biggest concern with this ailment is the kidneys, which can form glomerulonephritis, a chronic kidney disease. After treatments of the initial attack of HSP, the kidneys should be monitored through blood tests for some time to make sure that there is no severe disease present.
